I didn't feel quite at home in the "you suck" thread with this, I didn't buy a truck load of used saws for virtually nothing

I ended up with this saw after reading these pages for some time, it will be my main saw for the rest of my life...

I would love to see what you got yourself; big or small, new or old, ported or not. Thanks.

Went to visit family in New Mexico. My cousin had an 044 sitting out in a field. It was bleached white from the sun. Muffler cover was cracked and he’d on with bailing wire. It would start but wouldn’t stay running. I offered to fix it for him but he didn’t have the correct tools or care TBH. I bought it from him and shipped it home.

Piston and cylinder had very little wear upon inspection. New (old) covers, woods port, carb kit, rings, rubber bits, dual port muffler cover, air and fuel filters and it runs like a champ.

Congrats on your nice 5105. I hear good things about that saw and if it's anything like my EA/4300, (aka Dolmar 421), you'll have good reason to love it.

my timber faller brother bought this new in 2000 a 288xp lite
he gave it to me when he retired after 40+ year's
owning a tree company.20191209_160545_HDR.jpgi put a meteor piston kit it didn't need it but i had it apart anyway
and a carb kit, fuel line and a dual port muffler
it's my heavy falling saw.

I have yet to get a new new saw, but I'm thinking either a n.i.b. 372 or 500i would make a good first. The 372 is more likely as I've run 'em, loved 'em, and work at a husky place that still has one hidden in the back. Sorry if I chased you off @buttercup, I'll post up my money pit 048 to equalize things a bit. I'm into that s.o.b. for approx $300 - $400 and it doesn't even run. To add on to my sorrows with that saw, I just learned that the crank seal on the clutch side might need to be on the inside of the clip on the case, not on the clutch side of the clip, which is how I recall installing it. Now I'll have to tear the clutch side apart and maybe even have to split the cases for the THIRD TIME! If I have to split the cases I'm gonna say screw it and put an 045 Super top end on it as well.

But then when all is like it should and its running perfect - due to your effort; its all worth it and then some.
If you consider a "new new" just get the 500i because if you don't it will always be a shadow above your head :D

1986 266xp i had steve haling stumpshot on
o p e forum port for me View attachment 779594 very strong running saw one of my favorites
run 24" full comp in hardwood all the time.

That's 33/34 years! Quite a quality stamp. Nice guide bar too :baba:
And by the looks of that wood you have good use for it, I don't get to cut hardwood that size much - in fact I don't get to cut any wood that size much.
We don't have big trees in my area, all the Oak was timbered some 1200 years ago by some guys making dinghy's
Birch wood perhaps up to 12" and spruce up to perhaps 16" mostly. I have a big beech wood tree to take down and mill next year though, that one would certainly benefit from something like a 24".

by far the 2 series are my favorite
i started out with 266/268/272/281/288 in the 80s
and still run them
I've run and worked on most everything that's out there except
the newest generation.

The 5105 has a tendency to run hot with the cat in the muffler. You may not have that?

you do have the tidy little dawg. Nice!
the big ones they send this way are ridiculous. I cut mine down.

they are a smooth, powerful, solid-feeling saw.

Thanks, it does have the cat muffler. Not sure what to do with it though, I guess I'll do some more reading in here in the new year.
I was thinking about rebuilding it to the old version without the spring start assist to get that nice slim shape, but I must admit I have come to like it the way it is. I think it looks kinda classic - classic like a Porsche 911.
