So I’m looking at a few bucket trucks. They are davey tree trucks. Most of them have the lrv-55 boom. On the PTO hour meters I’m seeing 3900 or 1600 (06 f750). There is only enough for four digits on the hour meters. So my question is... is this probably 11600 hours and 13900 hours on it?

I would say it’s probably the 13900 hour guess. The meter could’ve stopped working also. In 14 years if that truck only has 3900 hours on it that means it sat and did nothing. I would have to guess 1000 hours a year would be average.

I was kinda thinking the same only thing is the hour meter if for the pto only. The trucks have around 120-140000 miles on them. Is it possible to have 11-15,000 hours on a boom and be a good unit yet?

I would think so. Don’t quote me on it but a truck coming from Davey should have up to date inspections and be in good working order. They are most likely getting rid of them to keep the fleet updated. At some point older trucks become a liability to larger companies. Down time cost to much so they get rid of them rather than risk having to wait for repair.

I've wouldn't buy an ex Davey truck with much confidence just because it was ex Davey. Ive seen Davey run some pretty crappy trucks that were definitely a liability during my time with Davey. One example was a bucket that was always overheating on the freeway every 3 miles even when going 55 or less and it went out every day with everyone knowing the piece of crap it was. Plus I've seen them run chippers with no air filter beside a rag over the air intake knowingly for months because the area manager was too cheap to spend $80 on a new air filter. The same guy would also just reset the oil change interval reminders on brand spanking new f550 chip trucks to avoid paying for oil changes:angry:. After working for Davey, I personally have little confidence in actually following maintenace schedules unless I knew the manager that was responsible for maintenance. I know some Davey managers who are really really good and thorough in maintenace and I know others who are holy terrors as well.

No those are the actual hours more than likely if that's the mileage on them. Most engines won't go 14,000 hours without an overhaul, so unless the engines have been rebuilt or replaced I doubt it. The PTO assemblies on the transmissions probably wouldn't run that long either. You've got to figure 35 miles of wear on the engine for every hour it ran in PTO mode. 3900 hours is about 130,000 miles equivalent on the engine.
