New to the forum guys. This site is packed with some very good info and guys with tons of experience I see. I just picked up a stihl 041 av super electronic ignition. I grew up running the old stihls and thought it worth a try to bring one back to life especially since it was cheap. It is all intact and stock. I got it home, looked it over and put some New premix from the can in the tank and let her rip. Light smoke good idle and crisp response. Made it through a 15” sweet gum and immediately idled up like it was lean and died. Checked temp looked it over and fired it back up and same thing immediately. Maybe the trufuel dislodged something in the fuel system, maybe a hose gave way to cracks. I am disassembling it and cleaning it now but only have an hour here and there between work, kids and such.Maybe this is already covered, but i didnt see it in my search. Thanks for all the help anyone can give. Id like to get this thing running like new. Get some spare parts and manuals for working on them. Thanks to possum for help and guiding me here. I will tey to keep it updated as i find info otherwise. yall are awesome.

I'd put new fuel lines, filter and carb kits in it after flushing the tank. The crank seals may need to be replaced too if they are original. Other than that, those are a good saw for up to 28" bars. They are no race horse but will get the job done.

Thanks sawfun. Yea i flushed the tank and blew out the lines first thing. Not sure on crank seals but on initial observation, no leakage and its always been maintained by stihl dealer. I ordered a rubber kit and looking for other culprits.

I bet it has a leak. That series of saws were leak masters. The intake track has multiple gaskets that can leak. Take the intake tract all apart, use the intake block and some rubber to block it off then pressure test it through the impulse line. You'll need to block off the exhaust as well. The clutch side crank seal is really easy to replace. Also do the in tank fuel line, filter, top fuel line(which just use tygon), impulse line(more tygon), all the intake gaskets and dress them with sealer, blue loctite on the bolts for the intake, and then rebuild the carb.

Yotaismygame thanks for that info. Ive got it stripped down to the block except for the top shroud/handle. The two screws in the front handle block seem to be seized so time for some teasing/heat. I plan on doing whatever it needs to get her right. These bigger saws are so cool. Maybe one day i will score my buddy’s 395xp husky somehow.

I have an 041 AV Super and it did the same thing. Definitely do what Yotaismygame said and make sure to tighten everything down with the loctite. These are fun saws but they do tend to rattle them selves apart. I run mine with a 28” bar and it is slow and steady. Lots of torque and I love the sound.

Thats awesome. Ive been wondering about a 28” bar on the super. Seems like it should do fine. Glad to hear yours is resurrected. Thanks for the info biigg50

I got the big bore bug now. Ive always liked them but now after hearing this one i want bigger and more. The 30-50cc saws spin up but just aint the same. Hopefully i can get the 041 right soon. Cleaned it up this morning and gonna check everything out
