Mag Rot - How Far Is Too Far?

Once the lower av mount has broke free the case is junk. That is not the mount you want bouncing around while cutting. In terms of the rest of the damage, a good mechanic would not mount money on that case half. All you are ever doing is stacking money up from the base, that base is whacked.

Get some JB weld mate, and after a thorough cleaning of, acetone, heat, solvent, heat, acetone, heat, solvent, heat etc, apply it and build it up till you have a smooth level finish and have filled all the pits.
Some more of the finish may have to come off to remove the rot under the bubbled bits.
Quick coat of high temp paint, and yet another learning outcome ticked and done, and a useful case half restored.

I agree. But I am big on salvage. My fallback would be a Farmertec case. But I believe that case could be salvaged; it just depends on how much time and work you are willing to put into it. If you choose to save it, I see sheet metal and JB Weld in your future for that AV mount.

Dunno..... if it were mine and I actually wanted an o34 (or 48mm top ended 034 super/036) I think I would be jumping all over the new but opened 034 crankcase.
Would be happy enough to use an AM clutch cover to complete the saw.
But if I had to find a good OEM piston and cylinder to add to the parts I had and the new crankcase...... I might be tempted to sell what I could off of the saw with rot and find something else to play with.
But.... that is just my opinion and what I would do.

If I was planning to use that saw myself (the 034 is a nice saw ;)) I would just reuse the case half removing as much of the corrosion as possible and reinforcing the rubber mount opening with some aluminum sheet material. It would probably outlast me for a number of years. If I were planning to re-sell it, I would look for a usable case - they did make a lot of these...

I'm a tig welder but that's just

Hi guys, a little update here as this post still has interest. I’m taking @trains advice and going to work on rebuilding the AV mount and using Jb weld on pitted area.

This is a project and not doing it for the $$. I don’t need the saw and I don’t need anything over an ms 180 in all reality, but I want to become a well versed and capable mechanic so I am willing to take on challenges even if it costs me more to fix than a new part as I’m learning all the time and that knowledge can be transferred to more valuable saws for repair

so I brought these to do the repairs

I then formed a female mould off q good section of the AV mount with cling film to stop adhesion. Span it around to span the gap and then did Jb weld and fiberglass sheeting in layers 3 so far.

I’ll then JB and fibergkass the missing chunk below the av mount and do w few more layers accross the AV mount.

working on the side cover too, here is first coat with JB will sand and recoat.

I have some ford grey spray paint on its way.

next will be to repair pitting inside case damming with tape.

this will be a wonderful learning experience so I can improve my ability and be able to fix future saws that others may deem scrap :)

Way to go mate, I was going to suggest job weld. Wear gloves when mixing it.

I use jb on gas tanks and on a secret project I’ll show here soon.
