Hey gents!

Beauty day out here in good old northern Ontario. Decided to play around with a 026 arctic I picked up for 50$ ... compression is 160, piston is mint. There seems to be a rattle on idle. Video link included. Thoughts? Not sure if it’s something on the crank. Revs nice. Need to do some carb work tho.

Any feedback appreciated.

After checking the externals for loose parts or rubbing, I would remove the muffler and make sure the piston to rod connection doesn't have excessive play. It could be a wrist pin/brg .
The vibration level could be elevated with a brg problem.

Sounds like it’s coming from the flywheel side. But I will be taking a look later this evening. Once my wife lets me out do the house! Lol

That is a little loud it seems, but right now I have at least five 026 s plus several more MS260. I have worried about that same sound before in the 026 s as I believe it is somewhat the muffler sound. I put a new piston and piston bearing in one and it did quieten it down some, as I believe all of them make a little bit of a noise like that. It will sound normal when the RPM s up as the same way with mine.

Arctic version is the key here... I'm wagering that one of the screws has backed out of the generator. Pull the flywheel and take a gander.

It’s behind the flywheel? Or you mean the flywheel cover ? It’s most likely on the flywheel side. Pulled the clutch cover off and also checked any loose parts... haven’t found anything.

Looked at the IPL... it looks like it’s behind the flywheel. I’ll pop it off tomm and take a look. Good call by the way :)

how would you determine that with the muffler off ?

Abnornal piston movement. Like twisting side to side, or up and down while crank isn't.
Again, it "Sounds" like a wrist pin.
Inspection of externals should come first.

I have been through a couple 026's that wore the intake side of the skirt and sounded just like that.

Perhaps is just me but i have had saws with more wear than that , that did not sound Even close to As S*itty. :). With compression at 160 I would not have thought ...

Well you've learned a good lesson about compression guages and 2 cycles.
Few believe, they are useless until they experience it first hand.

Try and hold a saw up by the recoil rope.
It quicker and actually more accurate than a gauge.
Or just pull the muffler. That tells you all you need to know.

That saw has been fed a steady diet of sawdust.
That's why the intake side is poslished.

Your bang on. The inside of the intake was FULL of oily sawdust. New top End and this bugger is running mean!

Thanks to all that have shared feedback!
