This one is the larger XL-98 and is all red. Basically an XL-925 with no oiler. There are actually a couple of carbs for these things that are fully adjustable, too. One is an HS-46. I think there's one more from the XL-88 that I didn't cross ref the Homelite number to Tillotson yet. And there are a couple of these that were actually made by Solo or Efco (or maybe even Partner?) I believe. They obviously wouldn't apply here.

This thing could also use a wrap handle and interior retainer for the air filter.

Ok the one I know of in the scrap yard is "newer"? Model but it does have the full wrap and looks complete. I'll try and get a peek at the carburetor in the next visit.

So I'm takin' a few of my Homies out for a run! A buddy of mine had 3 trees fall this week with 1 falling in his chicken coop.

Found a $10 HS-135A on the bay for the XL-98 that's headed my way. Would still be interested in what you may find at the scrap yard.

Is there any way the governor could be affecting the low circuit to the extent of killing the saw at idle? I haven't even tried to remove it as it's in there to stay. How about a reed issue? Seems to me they either work or they don't if in good condition with no cracks in the intake block or reed assembly itself.

I know those governors are intended to unseat/ dump fuel when a threshold resonance is met. I have blocked off many, but never disassembled the actual governor or attempted to internally clean one. I recall a conversation about an issue with one HS causing havoc at idle. I would reason if something had impaired the ability for it to seal (fine dust/varnish/concrete), it may be hung open somewhat and have a tendency to dump fuel regardless.

I was tempted to try removing it for inspection, but there's an obvious sealant which also looks conspicuously like red Loctite. Initial "feeling it out" yielded zero movement, so I've left well enough alone since. It has seen a few cycles in the USC already for better or worse. And it has dumped fuel back out the carb a couple of times, though I've just written that off as the low circuit loading up in general since the needle itself doesn't seem to do anything at all. It seems to run fine on the high circuit when I can get it up there without it loading up on the bottom first.

That red sealant is tough. I resort to carefully protecting and clamping the carb in a vice. A scrench with a driver through the handle makes it easier to apply the pressure and torque to break that sealant. I’ve run into a few where it looks like the PO’s had tried unsuccessfully to remove them. The brass slot is always all marred up. It helps to have a nice flat blade that fits tightly in the slot. I ground a scrench so I have to friction fit it with a couple light taps.

If a fellow can at least block the governor off, it should be easier to determine if the idle circuit is being regulated by the needle alone.
