Sometime ago I read somewhere about putting a ms461 carburetor and oil pump on a ms361. For the life of me I can't find anything on this subject. Oil pump is a direct fit. The carburetor however has a few things that need to be worked out. Impulse being #1 and the linkages from the trigger and choke to carb being #2. Anybody have any insight on this? If you have done this what did you think about it?

I posted a 361 upgrade and mods thread on AS many years ago. A lot of your answers are already posted there. Some guys here have stuffed larger cabs in the 361 with mixed results. But if you just want more power, go with a pop up or squish mod and a more open muffler and a re-jetted stock carb. Then spend the rest of your life keeping it in tune.

If you are milling, get a large mount Picco B&C and 3/8 spur drive from Europe or Canada, and you will be way better off. Lots of guys did that here with 440s back in the day. Maybe 10 years ago now. Thinner kerf, less wood removed, faster milling. Milling produces a very hot saw, and more gas in there will just create more heat. Not good unless you port the muffler to get the heat out faster.

Lakeside53 did a nice muffler mod on a 361 using tubing that fit spark screens from a stihl BR blower. Too bad the pictures are gone.

You are right about the mufflers and heat, I put a dual port on my 066.

I've been using pico chain to mill with for > 20 years now. There are a few places that now sell rims in picco for the biggers saws. 6K Products/Danzco is one. Hard to find large mount picco bars too. Stihl had made them and GB too.

Left Coast Products had great deals on the GB bars, I got a 25" for my 066 ~$25. Too bad they got forced out of business

Why?

A 361 won't be able to mill diddly.
I have a big bore kit on it and would like to mod it more. It's going to be my big saw while I'm in the tree blocking it down not milling. Got an 084 that I'm working on for that. The reason I posted here was because I have posted in a few other areas and nobody has said anything.

Should have kept OEM P/C. Still have it? Or was the lining trashed?

There is a great thread by Lakeside53 about modding the 361 muffler. Pictures are gone since the site crash. Also look up Windthrown 's 361 posts.

The search engine here is kind of wonky, I could not find you a link. Lakeside/Andy had over 20,000 posts. Searches have given me no/few posts/threads . You might have better luck?

Maybe the moderators could see what is up with the search function here?

Yeah, I bought some saws and stock P&Cs from Andy some years back. Used arborist saws that he did not want to mess with. They cleaned up nice. 026 stuff. He had a 361 P&C stock kit that I SHOULD have bought too. Never needed one though. I run Picco B&C on my 026/260 now and never looked back.

I slapped stock Canadian DP muffler covers on all my 044/440 and 066/660 saws. Made a world of difference. I have a DP muffler on one lighthly modified 361 that I got in trade on AS. It has a stock 460 oil pump in it. I run a 28 inch bar with skip chain on that with no problems. It would mill medium stuff OK with a Picco B&C. I am not into milling here though. Just firewood.

I bought a heap of GB bars and chains from Left Coast for super cheap. I still have them on most of my saws. Yep. too bad they are gone now. Baileys is not that great. Different group there after LCS split off.

Kinda hard to see in the pics. Still have a few questions... The impulse run through the air filter base and not hooked to the nipple? From the crank case straight to the carb? Do you have any pics of what the links look like on the carb end? An 066 intake boot is the same size as the 361?

Yes, from the crankcase to the carb through tank side of the air box. I did not feel like modifying the carb beyond the choke shaft mod.

If you need to see it out of the saw, I'll dig it out for you! I used a wire coat hanger to make that one but I would have preferred to use 3/32 piano wire.

No, 066 boot is slightly larger ID, a few millimeters longer and a bit thicker at the cylinder side flange, requiring a larger diameter clamp (044 clamp should work fine) I used a spare I had from a pile of parts. It was labeled 34mm. Yes the 066 boot flange fits nicely on the 361 intake. I like the 066 boot because it is the same ID @ carb side and the cylinder side.

Thank You for all the info!! Will definitely be using this new knowledge!!
