Thats great Ed ,you deserve to
I'm happy to say that the 10-10 I picked up yesterday is a runner! I put a new fuel filter in it,a different plug,a couple carb adjustments & it's a good runner.I had a set of bar plates on hand, but I'll need a new domed air filter Or fix the old one).

Thats great Ed ,you deserve a little luck once in awhile!
Better get out the sewing needles and cover that filter screen with some uni foam or felt.

Thanks a bunch. I hope the threads aren't screwed up from the wooden plug.
You have the number for the primer bulb also? It doesn't look like a generic.
If you want to really get into some "saw P.O.R.N" you could probably just get the whole IPL or manual for it, on the (Beg for manuals ) thead.;)

Many thanks. I will try that.
Many thanks again Mark.

You might need a new oil tank. The threads on the tank are external and are suppose to extend past the housing. It doesn't look like they do from your pic.

The primer is a very common small push in type. Easy to replace but make sure you get the hoses on correctly. The 2 connections are not interchangeable.

You might want to replace the oil and fuel lines. They are common problems on those saws.

Thanks.
Yes the fuel line is in pieces and the bulb fell apart when I pumped it. I put some gas mix in the carb 3 times and it fired each time.
I have the hose material and make my own. You are probably correct about the oil tank also.
My main concern is the piston and jug. No OEM air filter. just a piece of foam shoved in the air filter hole.
It's a freebie and I don't have a need for such a small saw, so I'm not going to spend a lot on it.

If it's got enough compression to fire, the P&C are good enough for a freebie saw! You might be surprised how good the piston still looks. My freebie 2.3 has 150psi.

Could someone please explain to me how to get this upper half of the SP81 off without breaking something? Studying the IPL suggests that I should just be able to lift the whole thing off after I've removed all of the screws/bolts, but there's something holding it on around this mount that I can't figure out. Does the whole mount need to come off with it?

There are several fasteners holding the tank onto the engine. 2 up front for vibration mount. One at the rear for vibration mount. This one can be tricky, the "special screw". I belive its a 3/8 wrench. Its gotta come out or wiggle the rear antivibe out from under the tank. Thatll take the 2 screws inside the airbox then squeeze it past the oil plunger rod and choke linkage from under the tank. Its tricky but can be done. Then....2 sorta under the carburetor holding the boot on. One at the rear of the handle also. The tank to top handle bolt also, the one on the side of the fuel tank. Then theres the grounding cable going to the coil. Also the impulse line will likely be the last thing to hold you up.
