I need to fix an 028. Can I take a good 028 super top end and put it on? I wasn’t sure if the stroke was the same across the two saws?

Thank you in advance.

Was there not an earlier 3rd 028 option that had a 42mm cylinder bore that is not as easy to swap to the Supers 46mm?
Kind of depends on the vintage of 028 you are starting with.
If it was an AV or AVQ 44mm, it should be a straight cylinder swap- but there are variations in oilers, clutches and mufflers to be wary of.
If it is the older WB 42mm, it becomes a little bit more difficult and requires some machining of bits to fit.

It’s a wood boss avq. I just picked it from from a friend to work on. I thought I would surprise her and put a 46mm on it I have from a parts 028 super. I’ll check it out and see what’s going on with the saw first.

Her words, “The saw lost its balls”. Local dealer said it needs a piston.

We shal see

The last of the 028 Supers were given the Wood Boss label, check to see what you have first- you might be starting with the 46mm
Think it went 028 Wood Boss 42mm
028 AV 44mm
028 AVQS 44mm
028 Super 46mm
028 Super Wood Boss 46mm.

It turns out the the piston and cylinder were perfect on the 028. So I will not be swapping the super cylinder over. It’s 44mm.

I checked the piston ring gap to .010. Should I replace the rings with cabers or let em be???

I’ll be setting squish, widening the exhaust port a little, and advancing the timing.

I'd put in the rings and replace the seals too (cheap while you are in there). Make sure the rest of the rubber/AV mounts is in good shape and do a carb kit. The gasket and seal for the oil pump are inexpensive too.
Thank you.

I will.

I already ordered the oil pump gasket because it’s leaking. But I see no seas. It has the all plastic oil drive gear. Are there supposed to be seals on it?

Have a look at the IPL. They changed pumps at some point, newer seal is #12, plug is # 13. They also changed oil pump drive and clutch along the way. I only have a super with the newer parts on it.

Crank seals are same as br400 blower, gasket kit for the blower is cheaper than buying 028 seals separate.
