It "catches" the chain if you have the misfortune of throwing one. It is a safety feature for both you and the saw. A flying chain has an amazing amount of destructive force.

It's a piece of metal, usually alum., mounted on the botom of the saw right in front of the clutch.
It's purpose is to catch and absorb the inertia of a broken chain, or a chain that has come off the bar, and slow it so it wont hurt you, or the saw.
That help any?

Good post. The only thing I'd add is that a chain catcher isn't fool proof. If you run your chain too loose or start putting side load on in the cut the chain catcher will probably help save your body from damage. But not always...got the scars on my forearms and knuckles to prove it.

this is what happens when you snap a chain on a wide open 066...chain catchers help to stop more devastation. and it keeps them out of your thigh when you throw a chain....even tho i've had that happen also

i understand they have a close relationship to chain pitchers.

serioiusly, my double dawg/roller chain catcher came today for my ms361.
i left the original catcher in place and installed the kit. looks awesome!!! any advantages or disadvantages to having both?

i understand what they are supposed to do i guess, but i can see the point of his question. looks like a flailing chain would just hit those things (especially my roller type) and just keep flailing... at least causing the rest of the chain to whip around at you.

Volks, finally got mine today even though the dealer added on the shipping charge...msrp + shipping on a part that was back ordered for a month burns my ass. Anyway, I left both on as well.

Sometimes a chain will break and sometimes break in more than one place once they start . Nothing you can do about it, really. Happens real fast.

$33.65 for the dawgs/catcher, out the door. bought a couple wedges too. wedges must be really high quality cuz the were stihl!!!!
i thought i read somewhere on AS that you should take the old catcher off (don't remember why) but the bolt held somthing else in place too........i'm too lazy, er, i mean busy to search for that thread.

I have often pondered the advantage of a roller catcher vs. the stock aluminum ones. I have only ever thrown one chain, and the aluminum catcher stopped it imediately. Seems like the roller catcher would allow it to keep spinning, and possibly whip around if a chain broke? I've put the roller catchers on a couple of my saws 'caus y'all said they were cool, but I still wonder. Anybody shed some light.......?

ive had aluminum ones that were only good for 1 chain throwing and they broke...

the bolt that hold the aluminum catcher is also the bottom bolt for the inner spike

If its not interfering with anything and you don't need the holes for anything I see absolutely no reason not ta have both installed.

Not sure what you are showing me... the cracked cover????

yea..the cracked cover...that came from a chain that snapped in half in the middle of a cut and broke the cover as and slapped around..that is a pretty fair bit of force...ive had them come apart of off just as hard and the chain catcher got them before they got me....chain catchers=good!

That screw also holds the AV buffer mount.

Installed my roller chain catcher thing on my 361. At first I removed the aluminum catcher and reinstalled the bolt that held it. My AV mount seemed loose. So I investigated and it needs the spacing of the stock catcher to properly tighten the AV mount. I ended up just taking it to a bench grinder and removing the 'hook'.
