Just wondering where everyone has the most luck buying their used/project equipment. I thought it would be interesting to see where many members turn to.

Do you find the most on AS, Ebay, Craigslist, auctions, or other places.

Just thought it might be fun to see if there are any big patterns.

You should have made this post a poll it would be easier to see the results...

I thought about it, but decided to go the way I did. I think you may be right though. Maybe some good info will still come out of it though.

I got both my saws off craigslist (the pro mac 610 ($25) and the Husky 40 ($40). No shipping charge is really nice ! (oh and no waiting for delievery):rockn: Plus when you buy something localy, you have the added benefit of checking out the saw in person !

I usually wait for people to move - they want to get rid of stuff quick because it has to be out of their house so the new buyer can move in. Also people wanting to clean out their storage containers is a good one too. And of course, husband dies wife wants to get rid of his stuff scenarios, and inheritance.

I don't go to garage sales because all the good stuff is long gone before I ever get there.

I have been looking into craigslist though, and check it regularly.

Ebay /estate auctions in farm country and the junk piles at my local saw shops.

+1 and we have a local service like Craig`s List, its called KIJIJI, and good deals there, yard sales in this area nets some good saws. Often times I ask the sellers about saws at yard and garage sales even if there is none in sight and have picked up dozens over the years that were not out for sale but when asked nicely most sellers have items they did not think would sell or thought buyers would proverbaly" beat them up" if they put a decent chainsaw out in sight. I don`t try to get them for nothing but have picked up many Pro saws for between $50 and $100. that needed only tune up type of work, mostly fuel filters, lines, carb kits or even a new spark plug to get them up and running. I wont count the nearly new Huskvarna 266 I found out with the trash on garbage day a couple years ago. LOL Pioneerguy600

I'm a 'diehard Ebayer'. I do my research and wait, and wait.

This is my favorite search. Stihl, Husqvarna, Jonsered, Homelite, McCulloch sorted by ending soonest. It's dynamic so I can always get back to it. Then I click the 'Stores' tab and have a look through that one.

Folks are real crazy on there at times. Like right now, as I type this, there is a decent looking MS260 going for $405.00 + $45.00 shipping. 40 minutes later theres a 440 Magnum thats only at $305.00 + $35.00 shipping. Sheesh. Don't know if I would pay $450.00 for an MS260!

ebay prices are too wacky for me... great place to sell.

deals are where you find em... could be ebay, craigslist or a pawn shop.

some of the best deals are from other AS members. it's pretty safe to purchase from a long time AS member.

no way they are going to ruin their rep by misrepresenting a saw. if anything they will understate condition to make sure you are happy.

my 064 came from another AS'er and it came in MUCH better condition than represented. great price too!

I have noticed some very strange paterns on Ebay also. I just wish that I had some stuff to sell. You can make a killing on there. If you do pay attention though, there are deals to be found on everything.

E-bay and Craigslist

I've picked up most of my Shindaiwa stuff off e-bay. It doesn't usually draw the high prices as Stihl or Husqvarna (Some on here say, "with good reason", but I've had good luck so far. I currently have a couple of good running 488's
that set me back well under $100.

I've made fewer buys on Craigslist but enjoy browsing the site. I've found that most people will respond to an offer and has the advantage of being able to view the item before purchase. I just bought a slightly used utility trailer and saved myself $600.

Did anybody see that 029 Super on Ebay the other day that went for $177 condition unknown IN PIECES!!! I look, but usually don't buy.

If I knew of a fertile place to find saws, the last place I would advertise it is on here.... We all know what happens to the Stihl manuals when the link gets out.

I know a gal who is a professional escort in the Pacific Northwest. A couple years ago, she took 3 saws and a splitter off a fireman in trade for her services. I dunno how long he got with her for those saws, but I am very happily making deals to get them shipped out here for me to either buy them off her or refresh and sell them for her. Since I've never paid for it, I don't think I'll ever know whether he got a good deal or not.

I've been scrolling Ebay and the prices are ehh' up there...because everyone looks on ebay and bids on good deals jacking the price. The deals are elsewhere, like Craigslist and other classifieds. you have to look often though, so you don't miss anything. I scored both my 272XP's from CL for a number that is classified...lol The guy only had one listed... when I called to ask about it... he said he had another and asked If I wanted both!... He waited 2 weeks for me to come get them! Another thing is to get to know your local tree guys...they replace their saws often and deals can be had there too if your in the know...

I am sure that I would have a lot more to look at if I lived in saw country. Don't get me wrong, we have a fair share of saws and shops in the south, but it could not hold a candle to some of the other areas of the country.

If you type in Husqvarna on an Atlanta search, you mostly only get mowers.

When looking for saws and parts, it's always a crap shoot on Ebay and CL. At least with CL, you can look at the stuff first and bargain with them on the spot. I think that usually on Ebay you wind up paying market prices, or more for saws. There are deals, but they are few and far between. Parts are a good deal, and it is probably the best place to sell, as someone else mentioned. If you want a project or hobby saw, then CL can be the best bet, and then Ebay for parts.

We are lucky around here in that there are a few really good shops that cater to loggers, and the prices and service are very hard to beat. New Stihls and Huskys are usually cheaper than the best stuff you find on Ebay. If you need something new and/or dead reliable, you buy from them. Also, there are plenty of higher quality used saws in the area too. For example, the 372 I just got on CL was bought new and used by a guy to clear his 5 acre rec property. After that, it had just been sitting in his garage. Then again, if you see a saw for sale in a known "logging town", there's a good chance it has been really beat and has high mileage.

Lastly, I've also had good experience with a couple of the supporting vendors here on AS buying parts and accessories.
