Here's one of my favorite collector saws : the Stihl BL

this saw dates of the fifties (Stihl used letters to identify the manufacturing years - this one is "F"

The Stihl BL was a series that represented the transition from classic 2 man saws to single man operated saws. It could be used as 2 man with a helper handle, but also by one man, because it was considered revolutionary lightweight for the time.

This particular saw was found with a farmer in the south of belgium. This farm has close ties with the royal family, so in fact it's a "royal" saw, literally. :)

it came without a muffler, so I had to make one myself, and it doesn't look too bad actually.

it's a great runner.

the usual rope starting technique

Since this saw is equipped with a regular float carb and no swivelling gearbox as with classic 2 man saws, Stihl introduced the swivelling carb. In order to make a felling cut, one needed to tilt the carb, as shown in the vid.

Needless to say, I am very fond of this saw.

That thing sounds SWEEEEET!

What year is it? Looks to be a fairly dangerous machine.

Very nice! It sounds like a 70s dirtbike I had when I was a kid. Funny that they called that lightweight huh. Wouldnt they be amazed to see saws today.

I agree it is a dangerous saw to operate.
One has to be very careful with the rotating rope pully while operating the saw. The normal operator position is behind the saw of course, I just had to be next to it for testing.

I already mentioned in another thread that the circlip spring holding the flywheel fan went ballistic during its first run, and hit my thumb quite bad. It went so fast that I didn't even knew what hit me, untill further investigation. I found the circlip a few meters away, so I got lucky not to be hit in the face.
