beerman6,

All comes down to tire pressure on an Argo.
Softish tires and it takes the bumps as well or better than any quad.

I've ridden both and a quad hitting a rock with one tire is much worse than an argo.
Beer and a soft cushion help in an argo or any quad though :)

That is deffently a no-no for sure. Wouldn't want to get caught doing that here in Maine. Big fine and possible jail time.

Brand new, yes. However, you can find a decent used one for the price of an almost new ATV.

I'd love to have one for what I do, but my 02 Yamaha Grizzly 660 works fine. If I were to go bigger, I'd buy a skid-steer. :hmm3grin2orange:

My yamaha grizzly 600 is a tremendous workhorse-bought it new 10 years ago and have plowed tons of Pennsylvania snow with it----our driveways was 700 ft long up a steep hill and i could plow going both ways-never has failed my once- you'd like it-one rugged piece of equip

Yeah i think it comes down to personal preference. I live about 12 miles away from a major fabricator/manufacturer of polaris parts (team industries). My neighbor works there and he told me a bunch of horror stories, but on the flip side of the coin they have built good ones too, but they wouldn't be my first choice. On the same token my neighbor bought a 99's suzuki LTF500f and pounded on it for 3200 miles before I bought it from him. He is more of a bombardier fan than suzuki so he bought a quest and he had tranny issues...and then the next year he spent like 17k on two bombardiers a 650 and a 800 HO and he has had a bunch of timing gear issues with his 650. I personally know the suzuki has less frills than the bombardiers, but they were more durable to him.

If your looking for something that can take you fishing to the most gawd awful acess place, pull trees through the same bush, act as a tree winch, go through terrain that a quad would never make.
Then get an Argo.
Not built for speed but for everything else, even floats and goes through ponds and goes through mud pits bigfoot would have trouble in.
Get a 6 pack or even an 8 pack argo then never look at quads the same way again.

I have always found Argo's interesting.

I was looking on their website and the ones under the Centaur applications look awesome!!!! A tracked mini truck.

The tracks would be a must just to offset the weight of the vehicle.

Here's the link to their website for anyone wanting some Sunday morning reading.

HONDA. Anyone that says there is a more reliable 4 wheeler is burning something other than firewood. Honda makes tough dependable atvs. Maybe not as flashy as some others but they are more likely to bring u outa the woods. I have a 05 Honda Rancher 4x4.

I have owned multiple brands over the years and can honestly say that if you want reliability, then Honda is the BEST choice. I currently havve a rancher and love it. Small size, independant rear suspension, auto shift or manual shift. Great machine.

Past machines owned:
Polaris 4 wheelers, got sick of changing belts when you pulled them hard. Constantly flat spotting belts even when pulling in low range

Polaris Ranger side by side. Thought I would like the side by side platform but hated it becasue you could not get thru the timber near as well as you could maneuver with a 4 wheeler. More flat spot in belts issues when plowing snow.

Yamaha Grizzly 660. Awesome ride, great pulling ability. Generally liked this wheeler, but it was cold blooded as hell and I always had a hard time getting it started. It wanted to sputter for the 1st five minutes every time you needed it in the winter. Possibly they have fixed that with fuel injection now.

Can Am, Biggest pc of crap I have ever owned. It was fast, no doubt about it, but if you needed to work on it in any way, you had to take it to a delaer and hook it up to a computer. Engineered by complete idiots. This machine is designed in a manner that clearly states, "we are going to rob you with high service costs to do ANYTHING with this 4 wheeler" And to top it off, they charge a higher shop rate to work on CAN AM than other brands. These are CAN AMs rules for the dealership. Constant overheating and going into limp mode, a lot of valve train issues, oil leaks from after 6 months. I dont know if it was a lemon or not, but it sure was a waste of money and time for me. Will never own one of these again.

I have an old (1991) Suzuki 250 4wd FourRunner that I bought at a garage sale back in 2004 for $1300. I drive it about a 1/2 mile to our river bottom with a 4x8 trailer, split a load and bring it back. I can haul about 1/3 cord at a time. with no problems. I just use low range to keep the revs up and save the clutch. I also use it to ride our fence line, haul feed, haul grandkids and lots of other odd jobs.

I'd like to have a newer and bigger machine, but honestly, this one gets the job done quite well, and it's paid back its purchase price and maintenance costs many times over.

If you want a single seat workhorse, see if you can find an used Bombardier Traxter 500 (or the John Deere labeled version). Lots of grunt, 750 plus #, automatic locking front differential, step-through design, etc - just a stout and steady machine. Ron

I have had a bunch of different atv's over the years. A few Polaris's, and a Suzuki. The Suzuki King Quad 450 that I had was by far the best 4x4 atv that I ever owned. Now I have a UTV and wont be looking back, way more useful around the farm.

Benp,

I own an 8 wheel argo.

Makes for great fishing going to places nothing else can go to.
The 6 wheel argo's are the most fun to drive but the 8 can carry more and get through the nastiest crud better.
Tracks mainly for snow or real muddy conditions but lots of guys run tracks all the time even going through ponds.

Real nice machine for log towing, pull downs with the winch and can haul quite a bit of cut lumber through pretty much any terrain.

Finch12,

That's for sure the Argo is more a work machine.
The 6 wheel argo's are pretty fun to just drive around, lots of fun towing friends with quads out that tried to follow you.
The first pond or lake you cross yep that's fun and driving through a few ft of snow in winter just a blast :)

Price point for the 6 argo is similar to other decent quads and the argo is a go anywhere all year beast so really better money spent i think.

I have a 1980 6 wheeler,got it for $100 a few years ago,bought a new gas tank,lines and a battery and it fired right up!

It does need some work though.
Low gear doesn't work.
Has 1 bad axle bearing somewhere.
The belt needs replacing.

I like playing on it but have never really used it for work, thats what the tractor and golf cart are for.

I've had good luck with Yamaha. I wish my 2000 Kodiak 400 had an odometer/hourmeter on it, I would love to know how many miles/hours are on it. I still have it, but I bought a 700 Grizzly EPS in 2010.

I've got a Polaris Sportsman 700 and it's been wonderful for my purposes. That being said, if I could do it again, I would go with a Ranger -seriously look at Turkeyslayers - That's just awesome - don't know if I would load it like he has in his pictures. When I purchased the Sportsman, I had just moved out to the county and didnt know a whole lot about which ATV to choose. Went with the local dealer for support, thought I would use it for 50% work 50% play, reality and 5 years later, it's 95% work 5% play and play only comes when my daughter uses it, not me. Ranger with a dump box and ability to haul a trailer. C'mon Man.
