Hard to tell, if its Ash it will split fairly easy, Gum it will be super hard to split and if it is Hickory you could smell it by burning a sliver and smelling it. Might be Gum though. My eyes are not what they use to be.
Is this ash, hickory, or sweet gum...etc?
This is the best pic the guy sent me.

If the OP would split a piece of it and tell us how it split and post more pics we could nail it. Also cut a sliver hold a lighter under it and smell for Hickory.Pignut maybe?
I have been wrong on 4 or 5 of these ID threads in a row now though so don't mind the crazy man LOL
Yup, if we have end grain, bark, and a fresh split we can figure out to 99 percent certainty pretty quickly. If the OP would split apiece of it and tell us how it split and post more pics we could nail it. Also cut a sliver hold a lighter under it and smell for Hickory.
Well you will learn sooner or later keep at it.Pignut maybe?

And clear pics yes.Yup, if we have end grain, bark, and a fresh split we can figure out to 99 percent certainty pretty quickly.
I could be persuaded to say sweet gum also... Not ash, and not quite right for pignut either.I am thinking Gum, lets see more pics.
Well lets see what he comes up with as far as how it splits and smells.I could be persuaded to say sweet gum also... Not ash, and not quite right for pignut either.
