A7D16A0E-A563-4D94-B07B-EE0F1E89CE63.jpeg I’m not familiar with Makita saws. I haven’t seen this saw first hand, but it appears to be a 6421. From the pictures I have seen, it does not appear to be a HD rental. The HD rentals I have seen, have the black cover. This one is white or light gray. Is this an older model? Trying to decide if this saw is worth looking at. Any help and comments are appreciated.

My 6401 is exactly that color, and it's not exactly new. If it runs and the price is right, I would buy it. The ugly handle may be its only flaw. They are known to poop a little oil, but that can be sealed up. I've pulled 32" bars with mine after installing a big bore kit. Best part about mine is that it always starts and runs strong.

I bought a 6421 for a friend last year for $400. All it needed was a new clutch cover bearing. He's used it so far to rip about 18 slabs with his Alaskan saw mill -- walnut, ash, and red elm -- pulling my 32" bar and semi-chisel chain.

Mine runs about dead even with my Stihl 046 Mag. Here it is working on big elm:

I like this saw.

Thanks for the information and confirmation. Planning to look at it tomorrow. And get it. I’ll post some pics and information on it when it’s mine.

i got a 2007 dcs 6400 for free from a Husqvarna dealer :) had some accident damage and internally was like new , not many hours on it atall so cost about £40 uk to fix it , then upgraded to 79cc top end and HD filter and black top cover and muffler mod , , powerfull beast now might fit the 372xp carb to it soon tho as its a straight swap with a tiny mod to linkage

Picked up the 6421 today. It was a HD rental in the past, before the previous owner bought it. Compression is 175 which I believe to be strong. Overall, good condition except for the broken handle which the previous owner attempted to epoxy and electrical tape together. It’ll get a new handle soon. Needs a bit of a carb adjustment too. I’m looking forward to doing some cutting and see how it operates. Does this appear to be a Cat or pre-cat muffler? Again, I appreciate everyone’s input yesterday.

Compression is great. Thinking that’s a cat muffler. Check with @fordf150, he can get you a non-cat if you don’t want/can’t peel that one apart. You’ll love that saw.
