Of the native clematis species, C. virginiana is perhaps one of the most widely distributed. Also known as virgin’s bower or devil’s darning needles, this fall-blooming species is native to the entire eastern half of North America. Do not confuse this plant with C. terniflora (sweet autumn clematis), a non-native species from Asia.
