I’m working to rebuild an 038 mag stihl, I put a new recoil kit in it and now when I try to start it I get backfire that seems to want to rip my arm off every time I pull the cord. What am I doing wrong?

Good idea checked it and replaced key, same deal. Is there a way to retard the timing or it possibly be a coil issue?check the flywheel key.It may have moved loose and timming is some advanced
No it’s good. I was reading somewhere about connecting rod bearings having play and routing out holes in the coil to retard timing. Could it beKey tight on crank and flywheel or does it have play?
Steve
I put a new piston/seals, and rubber, and rebuilt the recoil. No idea if it ran before. You said "rebuild",has it got the correct coil/wheel combo?
Did it run before?
It’s a tecomec, supposed to be the one the fits the saw.OEM piston? Aftermarket? Or one that is just the same diameter?
1119 030 2002, and I second guessed myself and pulled the piston. It’s dead nuts on with the OE piston.Does it give you the oem part number it replaces?
Harley T you are the man. I was reading one of your other posts, the SOB was hydrolocked with tons of penetrating oil in the crankcase. I turned it upside down cranked the piss out it, put the plug back in and rip.....magic. She won’t stay running but hey it’s a start, she sounds hella sweet though....a little shot of choke cleaner or a kit and she should idle. I bet this thing will pull like a freight train once it’s tuned up.Gasket?
Is it the same?
