Dan, when you have yours apart you may want to put some insulation on the intake bulkhead....mine was a 13 and didn’t have the top vent hole and was having heating issues when it was hot out. I updated the firmware and put in insulation...especially around the fuel line. I think that was updated since. Have no issues hot, cold, rainy or foggy....only issue is me getting a move on.......

You can do the air cleaner side without breaking the saw down but cylinder side is best when apart. The air cleaner side alone helped....a lot but I believe in overkill so I didcylinder side also.....for extra measure....
This should give you an idea. I used a foul type insulator on the cylinder side and an automotive type from the parts store on the carb side. It has a material filler along with the silver reflective surface.
 
No, I just used double insulation on that area. I’ve heard the newer saws it’s rerouted on to get away from the heat. Haven’t seen one to compare but may pull one off the shelf and look.
 
Sorry for the slow progress. Yesterday I picked up my parts from the dealer that came in. Then I had a chance to head up the road to visit @Red97 for about 30 mins before I had to go into work. Great guy! I will get started on porting this week and once again, HOPEFULLY have it started by this weekend. :)
 
Sorry for the delay, been very busy the last month. Anyways, I got the port work that I wanted to do to it done this week. Checked squish and it's right at .025". Missed my goal of .020", but I'm going to try it anyways. Last night I had time to check my port timing with the modded cylinder then test fire it. Timing numbers I got are 106-115-78 and stratos were at 79. I think that's going to be a good start. After reassembling, it popped in 7 pulls, and is really snappy. Compression is great, have no put the gage on it yet.

Great thread. Just got a 550XP in a fire sale and I'm interested in what I can do to pep it up compared to my other stock 550XP which is actually pretty awesome in stock form.

You can mod the muffler like this..
