plastic intake block also subject to fine cracking from carb weight bending and creating fine air leak.
Also the edge of the gasket on the pulse hole through the plastic black is extremely narrow and can get out of alignment or tear and cause an air leak
Is this the gasket you and Kevinj are talking about in the attached picture? I just rebuilt the carb on my 298 and now having trouble tuning it. Tried the original settings(1 high and 1.25 low) but can't get it to run without the choke all the way out.And my personal favorite: use of Tillotson carb base gasket from their kits will result in an air leak. The OEM gasket is shaped differently for the pulse hole. Cut your own or buy a 2100 specific gasket.
This applies to many Husqvarnas and Jonsereds of the era.

Thanks for info. Just bought this one off of amazon. i don't have the gasket I took out when I replaced it to compare to unfortunately but it's the part number from the 298 service manual. This my second saw, first I've had to do the carb on.That is definitely the wrong gasket for a 2100 and the source of your air leak. Google husqvarna 2100 carburetor gasket and you'll see what it looks like. Oversized to cover that impulse port. Lay it on that intake manifold and you'll see what needs to be done.
