What wood did you use for the mallet? A couple old time wood workers told me that Dogwood made excellent Mallets. I always liked Dogwood for firewood, but when I took down a big one my Inlaws had in their front flower box, I saved some big pieces for my BIL to turn for family heirlooms. They planted it in the early 60's and it's been dying back for ten years, finally decided to replace it.

The head is oak, the handle is cherry. Ive used hickory, hedge, walnut, ash,and apple. They all held up ok. Id like to make some out of ironwood. Those oughta be tough!

We have a few Ironwood, American Hornbeam, growing around streams. Size and shape close to a Dogwood, wood grain and density similar also. I don't see enough of them to cut down a green one. My parents old house had a bunch of them by the stream, but, that house is long out of the family.
