I have be putting together a plan and parts for quite some time, but this past fall I finally started my log splitter build. I took some things I liked and didn't like from multiple splitters out there and this is what I came up with.

I started with an 8" x 60#/ft beam, and through a supplier at work had a bunch of plates cutout as well as the reservoir shapes. 20180915_152546.jpg

I wanted to add a 4 or maybe even 6 way wedge, so I flared out the vertical wedge somewhat like Timberwolf does.

Next was work on the log lift. I don't like that on most the axle is just in front of the lift, so it makes life difficult to operate the splitter from the same side as the lift. I have the axle under the lift so it can be operated from the same side. Less walking around the splitter to load the next large log when splitting alone. It does however make this thing have crazy tongue weight. I would like to weigh this thing sometime soon and see what its operating weight is.

Thanks, don't look too close though there are some not so nice vertical welds. I welded almost everything except the reservoir. I had a guy at work tig the stainless reservoir together for me and the axle spindles.

I dunno - that was the first thing I looked at... the welds!!!

lol - j/k.... I dint see anything I dint like as to welds, or anything else. quite the rig! HD to say the least... even looks like it has Cessna wheels n tires on it, albeit prob just turf models. :) I can tell u this much... if I was a chunk... and saw u coming... I would lay down and pre self split... 6 pcs! lol. the log lift is great, most usually just lift one chunk... ur's lifts almost a whole trailer full! thanks for the foto essay, good pix. I can just imagine what your Kubota is thinking... "aww Gzz, how come I dint get built like that!??" lol

what is the cycle time for the ram, in/out?

looks very stout, how many T is it? over 50?....

Thanks! the wheels are galvanized wheels normally found on snowmobile trailers. It doesn't have a super fast cycle time. It is a 22gpm pump, 5in bore, 2.5in rod, 30in stroke cylinder. I wanted 30 inch stroke because I have both an outdoor wood furnace and a stove in the house. I want to split long wood, and 17-18 inch wood for the stove in the house. I plan to build a cylinder stop for when I am splitting "house wood". I need to time it, but I am guessing it is around 12-14 second cycle time.

Not sure how many tons, but the cord I split with it saturday it barely every went down to to lower gpm stage.

I made mine with a 36" cylinder so I could split 32" for my OWB and 2 rounds at 16" at a time for wood to sell. If you cut you logs at 28" and 14" you could do the same thing. I moved my axle ahead to be out of the way for splitting so I'm real heavy on the tail and you are real heavy on the tongue. I put my beam to close to one side so my tank and engine could be along side it, it helped but not enough. We can always correct anything on the next build. :)

You didn't design and build your splitter to split wood, you designed and built that gorgeous splitter to make the rest of us jealous!

A stunning piece of craftsmanship and thought!!

Thanks for the compliment! There are a few things that I know I will need to update/ modify/ add. But overall after 3 or so cords I am quite happy with the results.
