Trailers are nice and all. But you can't beat a good dog.

Make sure you get a heavy duty one. The ones like Harbor freight sells are only rated for 1100-1200 lbs. A half cord of fresh cut oak or hickory, for example could be more like 3000 lbs

I'd plan on a minimum 3500 lb axle

IF I were to do that I would only use that trailer to move seasoned wood, and even then you're right, the trailer would likely be overloaded. In that case though I'd allow myself the "1.5" rule, assuming the weight of the seasoned wood would be 60% or so of it when it's wet. I wouldn't use one of those trailers to scrounge wood, I actually like the cart size I have now as it tracks inside the atv's track even when I'm turning all the way to one side. So if I go around a tree or object I know the trailer isn't going to catch on it.
