This has probably been talked about before but I'm starting a new thread because I need help. I was given a Stihl 064AV with no coil. Is there a way to tell what coil I need by looking at the flywheel as it is attached to the saw? Probably not. I do not have a flywheel puller and instead of guessing, is there a flywheel/coil combo out there I can use as a replacement? Thanks

If you are getting a flywheel/coil combo, you will need to remove the old flywheel.

Yeah kinda figured that. Thanks for the bulletin but can you tell me what combo I need? I'm hearing the OEM coil that came on the saw are prone to burning out and I'd rather not spend $120 on something I'll have problems with.

The 0000 400 1300 coil is extremely common, just get a good used coil off of an 029/ms290, and pop that on and see how she runs, same coil, and every shop has stacks of that saw model/laying in their junk piles, you will have to install a longer wire.

Getting a flywheel off is the easy part. Knock the nut loose and back it off so it is flush with the end of the crank. Pick up the saw by the flywheel and smack the end of the crank with a soft face hammer (hard plastic not rubber). Might take a couple hits but the flywheel will come loose.

After reading through 20 odd pages of threads and going over a bunch of tech notes and IPLs I put this together hopefully it is helpful to somebody. The many fine folks here were invaluable in helping me understand as much of this as I can absorb so far :)
Pictures at the bottom of the post and corrections/additions welcome.

Thanks to Jacob J for the tons of good info on this topic.

Also attached is some interesting 064/066 documentation in a PDF that I hadn't seen here before.

There are at least two version of the 064 crankcase with different mounting holes for the ignition coils.

QUESTION - I have a flywheel 1203/1204 with a single keyway, when I line up the magnets with a dual keyway 1203 flywheel the single keyway lines up with the 1:00 keyway rather than the 12:00 keyway when viewed from the outboard side. So is this a limited or unlimited flywheel??

Thanks
Dave

An old thread!

Thank you grizz
I'm still confused on the "limited" and "unlimited" coils? Whats the difference? I'm getting that with the double key hole flywheel, I can run either coil?

You want the “ unlimited “coil, much easier to tune. The limited coils tend to act like the carb is set rich when in fact they might be lean, which can toast your piston before you catch it!

This is the coil I’m told I need. Is this unlimited? 0000 400 1300
