She said it was English. Does this look like English walnut? Cut like butter throwing big chips milling had to trim a couple areas with the 171. I gave the home owner settled for a slab in trade. I’m going back to finish soonE618351B-FCC3-46ED-8327-7E2EB108257D.jpeg29D6D14D-0EF4-4BBA-96BD-B9B513835BD6.jpeg 3D3C562B-B4C3-41C6-BB8F-81E72D2AB26C.jpeg61C3BA8C-4427-4100-B4A0-F881C9CB6A13.jpeg there was another nice log but had metal also. That’s in the bed cut in 2 pieces

How can you tell so easy? Pic is after color loss from sun
Black Walnut heart looks olive green when first cut, then darkens to deep brown while the sapwood stays very light/white. There could be variations but the bark looks way too smooth for BW.

You can see some of the green in that big square piece. most of the BW I mill is mostly brown, with tinges of green here and there. I had some English Walnut that looked very much like what you have here. It was on top of the burn pile and I kept getting other stuff of more importance. I let it sit on top of the pile for about 2 years and dern if it didn't rot on me.

Oops, I was looking at the pictures and didn't see the writing. Yes, it looks like English to me.

I think I do remember seeing green colors in the black walnut now here and there like you say.

Went back today and cut a nice 7” thick slab I plan on making a hefty sitting bench for 3 people or more. I have a hefty 7” thick white oak slab that could go with it. This walnut will get one of the sides cut off tomorrow about 16” wide. It’s at 24” now. The black area will be visible on the front. Excited to see it tomorrow DCA93811-2B0A-4D68-BB57-9E147A575251.jpeg13941B5A-5E7E-4BF1-901C-CC80639C8012.jpeg E5B43A60-011A-429D-973A-3A91548DB663.jpeg1BCAA540-0FFC-4C8C-AB94-CA8C6F4B95F2.jpeg

Thanks for stopping by Bob! :)The 2nd big slab is 6” and that’s about all I could get and still have a nice flat bottom. I’m planning on making heavy duty benches with these. The board is 2”x7”x5’. Possibly wide enough to make a gunstock. I’m happy with it, probably came out good because kota set the mill up instead of me85615CAB-8D65-4B94-B788-7B492CBE89CA.jpegsorry forgot to butt them up4F518952-982F-4A87-855C-979AFDFCEAC6.jpegEF89C7FA-FF5F-4E8A-97A2-C0F3AEDD5F17.jpeg DCA58328-EE99-4F8E-BCC5-33A0DDA41814.jpeg

Nice beach Bob. I would love to be there with my Alveys.
Tis' indeed a magic place not far from the Valley of the Giants (Tingle tree Eucalypts that grow about 250 ft tall and some have a base around 25t in diameter. They are quite rare and all forests are now in natural parks.
The beach itself is at the mouth of the Irwin Inlet on the south west coast.
Much of that coast is taken up by national parks so no dogs allowed and fortunately this is one of the few beaches that allow dogs.
The beaches are wild and dangerous and subject to large rips and king waves that can sweep you off the beach without much notice so you have to be careful swimming, and head to high ground if the waves recede more than usual.
To get to that beach you start from the tiny seaside community of Peaceful bay "E" , and drive or walk along the usually 50 m wide beach for about 2 miles until you get to the inlet "I".
Usually we park at E and walk the dogs on the beach but in the photo above we drove our Subaru on the beach with a bunch of mates as we were fishing and picnicking.
As you can tell it gets very windy - sometimes uncomfortably so.
Our dogs love that beach. Most drivers are sensible but we do see the odd "eedjet" screaming along in their pickups or 4WDs.
Big dog discovered a fly blow roo in the dunes at the top of the beach and rolled in the remains. I cannot get the image out of my head of the smeared fat, gore and maggots dancing on the the dogs forehead and back!
The amazing thing was after a couple of swims and lots of sand frolicking she arrived back at the car with no visible evidence of this although there was still a very unpleasant odour that lingered until she had a bath.

Good looking beach and inlet. Looks like it has fish.

Did some bbqing today also. Did a 10 pound pork butt for pulled pork and also 1 rack baby backs. Took only 9.5 hours at 250 hit 275 a few times. Going to pull it apart soon. Been in the cooler 2 hours resting. It will still be piping hot. This walnut is so nice to mill! My favorite wood to cut. I got 1 other slab also but it’s all white, it’s in the wood shed7FA8AC18-09E7-47B7-BF8D-DCE6B55A22D7.jpeg 3D5173DB-3EAA-435E-B455-5E120408DCC5.jpeg3B906524-5C4B-4E65-B575-E068E53A6C8F.jpeg DCA6F373-B867-49EF-97EF-EECCBCFCAD1E.jpeg
