Okay,
It's fair to say that the Shindaiwa 285s is the MOST gutless chainsaw ever built.
But,,,,,,
As with all Shindaiwa chainsaws, it's built like a tank and is probably the most reliable saw i own!
.
I plan to,
Port it,
Machine the cylinder,
Close up the squish,
Advance the timing,
Open the muffler.
.
I want this turd to make power.
.
Stock squish 1.52mm
Stock base gasket - 0.55mm
Ring gap - 0.45mm
Bore size 36mm
Inlet port width 17.5mm
Ex port width 17.5mm

I did the same with the poulan 3314. Lol all I did was trim the skirt of the piston to accommodate the intake and sorta ported out all the ports a little wider. Didn’t touch the ports on the inside and thus there really was no real change in performance that I noticed.

Next one I get I’ll see if I can widen the ports properly and see what happens. I found with this saw the flange on the muffler was larger than the port on the cylinder. That can be improved.
Also the air filter holder hole was slightly smaller than the carb Venturi so that can be improved as well. I never did change the air filter holder hole, maybe I should open that up a bit (it’s just plastic) and see :)

It was fun regardless of what people said, so I wish you the best :)

I ported a homelite 38cc POS home owner saw for practice last year. It rips now but the oiler died so I tossed the saw out.
I widened the intake and exhaust, making the exhaust bigger going into the muffler too, raised the exhaust/ground the piston down by the transfers about 1/16 or a little over 1mm if you like metric as I cant grind the top of the transfer ports, angled the bottom of the transfers and trimmed the intake skirt on the piston. It's a clamshell so I couldn't tighten the squish.

I see a lot of room for improvement on that exhaust port, its tiny at the muffler flange, fix that and tighten the squish and it will run a whole bunch better. Making the other ports wider will help a bit but the squish and exhaust will be responsible for most of the gains.

I was planning to set the squish at 0.50mm unless you guys think I should go tighter

40 is very safe in these small bore saws, I have many 50 cc saws running there and had no problems but one needs to run clean burning oil mix, don`t want a thick carbon buildup happening.

This is a pro saw with full alloy case machine. Built to last

I can see lots of work needs to be done porting. I would be tempted to open the transfer ports in the verticle section. Match the cylinder base gasket to the cylinder and case. Clean up the intake and exhaust.

I probably own the biggest pos saw anyone can own s mcculloch 2.0 eager beaver with a 9” bar. I carried it on the quad to keep the trails open. Once I tuned and adjusted it she ran good. For $20/$30 who cares.

Think I'll sharpen up the chain on the little Homie XL2 and giv'r a go this weekend.

Took the screen out and she's loud and proud for 26cc.
