20 or so years ago, I was building a lot of Railroad tie walls in the area. Railroad ties have lots of grit and dull chains quickly. I bought some Carbide chains and found they cut just as well as regular chains but stayed sharp much longer. They aren't perfect, you can knock the carbide off if you hit a really hard, large rock. It depends a lot on who made the chain, and how well they made it. But if it's like mine was, and you are sawing dirty stuff, you will spend less time sharpening than with regular chain.

I just looked on Amazon and saw some Carbide chains. They have a carbide piece attached to each tooth, The ones I bought years ago had a carbide plating on top of each tooth. I would say the ones with the attached piece might break if they hit rocks.
