My boss has 5 of these and they're great saws but they've also given me the first carburetor issue I've ever had difficulty repairing. The OEM carburetor is about $80. Can I slap one on and expect it to work without any specialty tuning?

Yes, but you should perform calibration on them after putting a new carb on. That sets the fuel mix for the conditions right away vs using it for 20 minutes while the saw potentially plays catch up to the conditions.

In order to do that, don't I need a specialty tool?

If so I'm getting it. There's already no way I'll ever stop working on saws so all I can do is invest.
