Rebuilding a Stihl 034, should I try it?

Good, which fuel line did you order? 8mm or 10mm hole? I upgraded mine to 10mm... It is a Stihl design "improvement"

Have you looked inside the metering chamber (4 little screws) of your carb yet? post a photo of what you find/found.

Hey I didn't look inside carb yet. I bought this impulse line:

And this filter:

After you asked that I started thinking do I still need to buy a fuel line?

Edit: I still need to get the fuel line, what do you recommend?

You do. When he mentions sizes he's talking about the opening into the fuel tank. It's probably best just to go modern and pick up a 290 line and open up the hole into the tank.

I have no problem drilling it out a bit, will this one work?:

Edit: this is adding up no wonder the stihl dealer told me it'd be cheaper to buy new! Lol I'll be very proud if it works though....

They should. Something I've learned though, creating a relationship with a local dealer could serve you better than the few dollars or time you may save. May not seem important now but if you do more saws it could pay off.

True true, I just don't have the time working 60 hours a week right now and with a two year old at home, I CANNOT beat the convenience

I work a lot too. I research and take a list of numbers in. I don't take what they stock, have them get everything to pick up when it's all there. Less than a five minute stop each time.

This part is NOS but should work. The one I bought directly from a dealer had been superseded to -7705.

You will need to drill out the tank to a final size of 15/32"... just UNDER 10mm. Start at the current size and work your way up to the final size in 1/64" increments. This will keep the bit from grabbing. I usually stand on the tank and hand hold the power drill from above.

Yeah you're right, a lot of moving parts with this project. Once I'm more comfortable with the process I should have no problem making a list and bringing it to Mr. Stihl. I'm kind of on a deadline with this project because I'm clear cutting a hillside so my son has a sledding hill this winter... and I can only do it in August because that's the only time it's dry enough! If I don't get it done in time though I'll either borrow my buddies or rent one. Then I have to start on this pile of black locust that's been sitting! Ahhh such is life.

You should shelve this and spend some of the 60hr week money on a rental saw. Do your grandpa's saw up right later. Handle the sledding hill now.

Thanks.

So in the hell does the PTO side seal on an 044? I understand the seal meets bushing. But then you have space between bushing /crank. That is a LEAK!.

So if you leak test a 044 you will always have bubbles from PTO side?

Some smear grease between the crank and sleeve, some use a sealant. They don't leak when the clutch is tightened down
Like Kev says above.

The spacer actually has a recess to retain a small O-ring under it so that the it seals the inner to the crank. I’ve found it in older models and I haven’t in later 440’s. It sometimes just disintegrates. So yes, there’s almost a small airleak built into 044’s, but if you use grease for your initial testing, it will hold up fine.

Literally have built over 25 of them. Whatever leak occurs doesn’t clinically do a darn thing, or the small leak gets tuned out upon initial tuning.

I don't do enough Stihls to remember. The Hiskys take a special tool.

That's a good point just did a drum on a... I think Husq 460. Had these sort of half moon springs in the clutch; easy enough to get out though - in fact easier than the 19mm Stihl's can be. I think I used an Echo style tool but it worked fine.
