How to pick the right spot to plant a tree?

As they said, not enough info. In my opinion, there are few "wrong" spots to plant a tree...just the wrong tree is put there.

Do you have a specific tree you want? If not, is there something specific you want of the tree (tall shade tree, flowers, fall color, a saw log in 80 years, a place to hang a swing some day, etc....).

Then, what options do you have for spaces. Look at soil, underground utilities, overhead obstructions, nearby buildings, sightlines, etc...

Just going off what I see everyday, pick a Red Oak, Silver Maple, or River Birch and plant it six inches from your house. Then get confused and worried when it towers every structure you have years later.
