Here the 462 is at something like 2130.48 AUD with bar and chain, the 500 is at about 2458.25 AUD with bar and chain, that's a 86,7% vs 100% difference.

- "Why would someone pick the 462 over the 500i ?"
The 462 is at 6,1 kg without b&c, the 500 is what? 7,5 kg? + bar and chain what? 9 kg? + fuel and oil what? 10 kg?. That's something to happily jump around in the woods with if you really don't need it I'd say.

Ms 500i is £825 and the 462 is £750 so only £75 difference :)

Ms500i is 6.2kg not 7.5kg

where have you seen those prices in Australia?

UK prices are from Gustharts.com

Ok, it says 7,57 kg here but I guess that's with a 20" bar and chain.

Those where prices recalculated from NOK to AUD (as bank transfer) for your convenience :hi:

The 462 is the successor to the 461 (a safe lineage), whereas the 500i is a new breed of animal. Myself, I would wait a couple of years for any bugs to be found and fixed in the 500i. To expensive for me to pay to be a product tester for Stihl.

The 462 has pretty much zilch in common with the 461 other than the model number. You certainly can't lend the 462 any reliability based on the 461's reputation.

If anything, the 462 is the next saw in the 261/362 lineage.

Still old school give me a good 441 or 461.
would you always pick an adjustable carb over m-tronic? Interested to know why people pick one over the other! I guess adjustable carb for simplicity for those liking to do their own maintenance and fixing, but i’d imagine the m-tronics are reliable enough not to have to worry?

Same reason old stick in the muds still use a Nokia mobile phone when Iphones are available- some call it old school because the Nokia works and does what it was designed to do, if you break it you might be able to fix it cheaply at home- but the Iphone does so much more and does it easily, you just cant tinker with them the same. ;)

Seems like the 462 is an evolution of the 441c rather than 461.
The air filtration, the m-tronics, av's etc. (Displacement = more like461.... ok yeah).

I have a kindly used mmws 441c and consider it my "poor mans" 462 only... not a single compromise to be found :D
I've never run a stock 441c.
Is it old school? If cold starting by the 3rd pull and running a 28" full comp in just about any wood like it's a 100cc saw is old school... yeah it's old school!

But back to the original question... Has anyone actually run both a 500i and a 462 and ended up preferring the 462?

The 462 is getting rave reviews. Does it have any advantages over the 500i?

I'm pretty sure I'm selling my ported 461R to get either a 462. But now I might make myself wait for a 500i. Bah
