Does anyone know what these side pieces are for on the maul?

The downward momentum is transferred to pushing the two sides of your round apart.
It works on straight, not to hard, grainy wood types.
So the "like crap" in most other cases. Sums it up nicely.
The greatest upside though, is the boink cloink noise it makes.

Hmmm been around axes and mauls my entire life and never saw one......I'll take y'alls word, works like crap.

Cool thanks for the info. I just saw a guy selling them on CL and have never seen them before so I was wondering how they worked.
