Long time reader, first time poster. I recently got a ps-510 off ebay from a seller who disclosed the saw needed a coil. I figured it would be pretty straight forward to pull the coil, read the part number off it and order a new one. Of course there is no part number on the coil, so I've been searching for the right replacement. I'm coming up with all sorts of numbers and nothing definitive...

181143204 = non easy start? (pretty sure I don't want to try this one)
181143205 = red, ps-510 (but doesn't denote easy start)
181143206 = dcs5121 easy start (5105/5121 use the same coil as the 510?)

The coil that came out is black and I assume the original. The plug was an NGK BPMR7A and looks new. I'd guess the seller put a new plug in hoping to solve the ignition problem.

Overall the saw looks to be in great shape, but only pulls 140psi which sounded a bit low to me. I yanked the cylinder to have a look and everything seems to be good. Cylinder still has good crosshatching and the piston has almost no wear. For grins I pulled the base gasket and checked piston clearance without it, came in at 17.5 thousandths. The base gasket measured 38.5?! I'm definitely not putting the stock base gasket back in, but not sure if should try to find some thinner gasket material or if 17.5thou is enough clearance.

If it's truly. 017, you'll be fine. That's getting close though, I'd double and maybe triple check.

Nothing confusing about the coils, does your saw have easy start or not? The starter housing is a little wider and theres a sticker on top denoting easy start. If you figure out what you need and want to pay for some shipping I could loan you a coil to try before you drop the coin on a new one.

Much appreciated for the offer to borrow a coil! If I can't be reasonably assured I'm buying the right one I might take you up on that.

This saw says easy start on it and is from 2012. I guess my confusion is about not being able to find a Dolmar part number that explicitly says it's for a PS-510 easy start saw, and discrepancies about coil color. To add concern I've seen a couple references online about differences between flywheels for certain years.

For example, here it would seem I'd want the 205 part number and says the coil is black: http://download.dolmar.com/manuals/17762.pdf
Here it says 205 is red: https://cdn.makitatools.com/apps/cm...a683-c66a2bf63632_DCS5121_PS-510_PB_Rev_2.pdf

Went to my friendly online reseller and find this for the 205: "This Item is No Longer Available. 181143205 has been superceded to 181143206. "
I then check out 206 to be met with: "This Item is No Longer Available. "

Found another site I've not dealt with before that says the 206 will be back in stock in a couple weeks. So maybe some sort of national back order?

In the meantime it looks like sawagain has part 181-143-212 listed for DOLMAR PS-5105, MAKITA EA5000. I went looking to see if I could cross reference that part to any other saws and found on another site with this description:
Makita Dolmar ignition coil. Part number 181 143 211, 181143211, 181 143 212, 181143212
Fits Later models of PS5105, PS-5105, PS510, PS-510

So this leads me to believe the coils are interchangeable between the 5105 and 510. So now the questions are
What is considered a "later model"? year/serial?
Are all "later model" 510x and 510 easy start?

I'll reach out to some of these sellers to see if they can shed some light on the situation. It seems strange that I can't find a nice simple chart of compatible parts for this saw. I guess the online parts list/diagrams just have dated part numbers.

Wow, rechecked the clearance with thinner gauge solder and it's about half of what I measured the other night. I'm not entirely sure how that's possible, I wouldn't think the solder would have that much spring to it. Sure glad I didn't run it without a gasket.

Ordered a coil part #181143212, hopefully it does the trick.

The 181-143-212 coil you ordered fits the PS-5105 Easy Start and the Makita EA5000P. This will not work in your saw. Timing difference and the plug wire will be shorter.

You need the 181-143-205 or 181-143-206 part number coil. 181-143-206 supersedes the 181-143-205 ignition coil. This coil is in stock at Makita USA.

Doesn't the chart you posted show the 212 part fits the ps-510?
If it was built in 2016 or after...

In 2016 they streamlined that series. The PS-510/DCS5121 aluminum cases switched to the PS-5105/EA5000P magnesium cases.

So those saws were identical except it still had the open port cylinder, & spur sprocket.
