Hey all, I am a newb on here, but wait before you slam me with the filter and muff mod stuff.
I bought a early 10mm stihl 044, its a 120's serial number.
Compression is 125psi so I pulled it apart to have a look.
Lots of nasty piston skirt scoring and scratches.
Base gasket measures 0.040" which seems odd to me...
When I bolted the Jug on without it the piston interfered with the squish band... normal for these saws?
I have a meteor piston and cylinder kit on the way as well....
See what I have below and tell me your suggestions on re-using OEM cylinder and port timing.

Numbers (tell me if something is not right here, new at the wheel)

Exhaust open @ 103*
Intake open @ 73*
Transfer duration 117*
Blowdown 20*

What would you suggest other than a HD air filter swap to prevent this in the future? Any advice on the port numbers?

Your numbers are good, the slant fin 10 mm saws had the best numbers stock from the factory for this line of saws. More can be done to them but lets not go there yet, I run the low profile stock filters on many of my 044`s, have done so since 89 . That filter and the sealing of it around the perimeter had some problems on some saws. Hard grease around the sealing edges and an extra shim under the airfiter cover nut fixed all of mine, got a few with high hours on them without any dust ingestion.

Return the meteor cylinder pronto. Get a 10mm meteor piston.

Your jug should clean up well.

You’ve got a factory hot rod there. Keep it that way.

The 044’s came with either a .020 metal gasket or a .040 composite gasket, so what you have is correct and can be swapped out.

I did the conversion to the HD setup. You can use AM parts, but the AM airbox covers will grab the control lever. You’ll need to relieve the grooves.

That’s one of the few saws that needs very little to be right on the heels of a full port job.

I’ll see if I have pics of an HD conversion.

Nice lookin' red lever 044 bud! Thanks a bunch guys, that's the plan. I spent some time last night with some emery cloth and scotch bright... got the cylinder looking really good. Only thing that worries me is on the bottom edge of the intake port the plating looks a little wore through. I will post a couple pictures of it this evening. Also I have the AM plastic and filter holder coming and a Max flow filter.

To be honest rolling the crank around the bearings felt a little stiff and bumpy... I ordered bearings and gaskets from the local Stihl dealer up here... I figured it would turn in to another can of worms but this saw is going to be a beauty! Keep the suggestions rolling I want this thing to be a solid work saw, thanks again!

Current state of teardown and clean... started to work on the cylinder too going very slowly... pics pics pics
