Well she was old when I got her I tuned the carb the throttle don’t ketch until half throttle I been running her 7 yrs and she is bogging down in 20 inch cherry. I don’t think she is breathing good. I am having trouble finding info on her to help her out. I am 6 cord in this year with at least 15 more to go. And my little brother needs to go down.

Probably time to do the carb, lines, filters, seals and maybe rings for good measure. Mastermind has posted some 038 porting numbers if your going that far might be worth a look.

If its against a 2065/2166 or up your asking a lot. Maybe with long bars buried.

You have a link for the porting number from mastermind

Well my dad and brother both run johnsereds the big one I am against is a 2170 turbo. I don’t have much cash and she cannot go down she is a working saw so how do I get her running hotter on a shoe string.

And a link to mastermind without a little info i am stuck.

I run a 20” Stihl bar with a husky chain and a spacer so she don’t bind

I searched for mastermind and read through the titling that came up I cannot find anything on038

I'm almost ready to put my first modified saw back together. Muffler mod, base gasket delete, light work on the transfers/ports.

The nessecary expenses so far:

1 exhaust gasket
2 muffler bolts
1 intake clamp kit (you won't need, it was to remedy a known problem with the type of husqvarna I'm doing)
1 air filter
2 litres of kerosene (paraffin) to clean stuff in.
1 tube sealant.

I bought a few extra things because i wanted to, but they weren't necessities.

Im taking a chance on the ring, fuel line and vacuum line. Plus not kitting the carb. I should probably have done them but this is just a weekend saw.
The plug has just been replaced.

I will have to pay for the brazing on the muffler and a vac test.

The bulk of the muffler gutting was done with a drill and i little set if tin snips + needle nose pliers.

Most of the transfer/port work was done with chain files.

Some work was done on both with the dremel but not having one would just make it slower.

The base gasket was done with a home modified tool that doubles as a gasket scraper.

It has taken a lot longer than i expected but i am doing most things about the slowest way possible.

Okay, wow. I think I am going to have to do this a little at a time first let’s list out the three big. And see what I can do.

Base gasket. How do you delete a gasket?

If done that would increase compression.

Then would need bigger exhaust but not too big or lose back pressure.

Then the car would need adjustment and could the stock carb handle it.

Timing ?

And MM porting specs are big I had to read back some and he is running a larger carb and he doubled the exhaust.

@Mad Professor is really good with these too.

Honestly all my old west German 038 has needed is maintenance. Filter, Fuel and impulse lines. Carb cleaned and a diaphragm kit 5 years ago. New clutch and spur sprocket when it got the 32" bar.

Cuss it a bit when my thumb bumps the choke lever in the cut. Especially with gloves on.

Maybe you just need too add a turbo on the 038 to match your brothers 2170 turbo.

Yeah I bumped the choke once and I had to pull the distributor wire, she blue smoke that day, tough saw

I'm assuming you're up against a Jonsered 2071 turbo (not 2170).
If so, it's gonna be a struggle. The 371xp platform is absolutely beastly. Even if you had the 70cc Magnum variant (which I believe disappeared pre MS380 rebadging), the Jred has you beat with chain speed.
I don't know if there's a big bore P&C available, but at the very least, you'll have to do some port work, and run race fuel.
The MS380 and the 2071 were designed and built for completely different end uses. The MS380 is a large cc farm/ranch saw. While powerful and reliable, it's a cheaper alternative to the MS440. The 2071 is a production logging design, with power and weight being paramount.
It is possible, however, you've got some work to do. Focus on details, and don't forget to run a sharp chain. Not "new" sharp, but really sharp.

Not pretty
