Need a new splitting axe or mail. Please Advise...

In the same boat. My training program of watching TV and browsing the Internet isn't cutting it.

Do you guys sharpen the old style mauls? I'm using 6 and 8 lb. Never tried the fisker style. Lighter sounds appealing if they work as well.

Yes thery work as well as reported. My 6lb maul has just about been retired, still use it when I have a knotty chunk that has to be beat apart. I haven't even sharped the x27 since I got lo these many years ago. Still amazes me how well it works.
 
Big improvement after working on that old maul. The top edge had become blunt (ground splitter). I worked the whole grind back a little but kept the same shape.

Started season with a 20 - 24" red oak trunk that kicked my butt for a minute. I foresee some noodling in the future and looking at those fiskers.
