Ms 260 pro advice

Hi guys!

Some of you may remember me trying to get an ms 260 ( fathers saw ) sent from uk to Australia.

Back in the uk now and had a look at it. It’s the pro model with fully adjustable carb and Oiler.

Pulled the exhaust and can see considerable scoring. Likely to be oil seals leaking air and leaning the mix causing scoring. I’m going to bring it back without the piston, cylinder and seals and then replace them (will check bearings and crank of course. Not totally sure what it will cost to replace with OEM but I’ll do it anyway. I plan to overhaul the whole saw with repainting it too after stripping the old etc. should be a fun but long project!

Definitely refurbish it! Good sentimental saw project there!!

bring back the cylinder, most likely can be saved, is a high cost item.

Clean up cylinder, new meteor piston, pressure test and run. After about 3 tanks compression will be very good.

Hard to say for sure without seeing more surfaces of the saw but what I can see is a saw that will look GREAT after a good cleaning and not so great if repainted. That said, do whatever sparks joy (apologies to M. Kondo).

Just refurbish it. I have seen people restoring older saw than this. Except the sentimental value, such saws have great value to collectors also.

I always pressure test a saw before I tear it apart to see where failure actually occurred.

Yes I would like to but don’t have the option as all my tools are in Australia haha

While you have it apart, a MM and setting squish will make your Dad happy.

Why the need to tear it down before the trip? Are parts more available/cheaper than in Aus?

P/C and/or covers is not going to make the weight or package much bigger. The bar might make a difference.

The whole saw can be tested before and after for pressure, squish set, and ran/tuned when work is completed.

I don't see a downside?

Can’t post engines with any postal service (fuel fears) I have tried and it’s covered in dirt and Australian customs won’t allow it in!

So don't tear it apart until you get back to AU! Take the whole saw back. Make sure it don't smell like gas on the plane. Oil shouldn't be a problem but gas (or the smell of it) would be.

BTW, the FW crank seal is a known leak point. Could also just be old/bad gas.

I don’t have any weight allowance / space left in my case, but a family member is coming to Oz in a few months and they don’t need checked in for themselves so they are checking the saw in haha
