seized ms 039 new project

[Vintage Engine Repairs]

Has anyone got any experience with the Ms 039? Going to collect one tomorrow, will cost $27 USD plus an hour and a half drive.


I d0n’t mind a little road trip especially when saws are so low on the ground here.

Thinking I could merge the current 029 with the 039 and take the best of each of the parts and put them in one saw for rebuilding, but do they fit is the question?!

Some of these may be needed...

I should have added in my first post, the 039 is a clamshell built saw, nothing like the mag case 026.

180 (going to put a new cylinder and piston and that’s finished)

025 (haven’t started)

260 (waiting on the parts)

And will pick up the 039 tomorrow for another project.


Ah yeah I understand it’s a clam shell, little rubbish, but I think it’s probably worth grabbing just in case, saws here are so thin on the ground!

The 029 ,039 , 390, 290 ,310 are good saws for the money , don't let anyone tell you different. and will cut their a$$ off with a little modifying

I have a straight gassed 290 on my bench to convert to a 390.

These saws are a complete pain to work on. If I hadn't committed to fixing it for my cousin, I would throw it away.

To be clear, the 029 and 039 are almost identical, except for the piston size. The newer saws are ms290, ms310, ms390
and they are the same, except for the gascaps, and the newer ones had a more modern looking rear handle/air filter cover.

Where did the 036 come from thought we were talking about 029/039?

Photos show an 039...... but give it a week...... then there will be an 036!

I joined this site with an old 026 and a new 261cm. I now have 2 461s, an 066, a 360 pro, a 441c, a Dolmar 6100, a 460r, another 026 pro...

And I only cut firewood and do some small tree jobs on the side. I could do everything I need to do with the 441c and my 261c. Oh well, such is life.

There's been an 029 with low compression for sale locally for a few months now. Price is low enough now that I could easily toss a FT engine in there and turn a good profit. I just can't make myself want to work on it....
