Trying to identify what a Stihl saw is. Person that owned it said it was an 029 but the model code for 029 and 290 is something like 1117 which would be a german saw and this one the model code on the serial number is 2222 which would be a U.S. made saw. The dealer says the serial number on the saw was never registered for warranty so there is no way they can tell what model it is supposed to be. Who know what a 2222 is?

The serial number is not the same as the saw series model code. The series model code for the 029 through the 390 saws was 1127. That number will be stamped on a lot of parts of the saw. There may be other 4 digit series code saw numbers stamped on parts of that saw that used that same part. The serial number will be longer than 4 digits. The first number of the serial number of any Stihl saw designates where the saw as built. #1 means Germany, #2 means the USA. #3 and on mean other countries including Brazil and China. The 029 saws were made starting in 1992. The 029 Super (same as the 290 engine) started being made in 1998. The 029 run ended in 2000 when the MS290 came out to replace it. Also if there is an X or a + at the end of a serial number on the saw, that mean that that saw was randomly tested for quality and passed at the factory.

The 1127 series saw serial numbers are all stamped next to the muffler on the plastic saw case. A 2222 serial number would be missing the last digits. The numbers on these plastic saw cases can chip or wear off. The serial number would also be on the original sticker with a bar code placed under the muffler of the saw when it was new. Those always wear off pretty fast with use though. All later model Stihl saws would be 9 digits long. A 2 as the first serial number means it was built in the US at the Virginia Beach factory.

Well aware where serial numbers are stamped on the boss between the muffler and clutch cover. The first digit is usually country. The first 4 is the model code which is more of a series design like the 044 and 046 have the same style although the cranks, bearings and crank cases are not the same. At an rate, the FIRST FOUR DIGITS of the serial number on this saw are 2222. Dealer can't tell me what it is stating they have to have the entire serial number which I gave them and then tell me only saws registered for warranty are in the Stihl dealer look-up directory and this serial number was never registered so they have no idea what model it is. Also not here: http://slugaservice-com.3dcartstores.com/assets/html/S_specs.html

Even in the link you provided it’s saying what the others said... the 4 numbers are stamped on the parts. The first 4 of the serial number are not the series numbers. Pull the top cover and look at the cylinder and there will be 4 numbers. Or the clutch cover or something else.

Mad professor, this is not the first time you have used this smart ass comment with me. What exactly is your point? Spell it out instead of just being another bully prick.

Sorry, you are wrong. The first 4 digits of the serial number on any Stihl saw are most DEFINITELY NOT the series model number of the saw. What I wasted my time replying to you here is accurate and correct. I have owned and run well over 100 different Stihl saws, over a dozen were 1127 model saws. I know them inside and out.

You post here wanting information and then you wanna give me this kind of in your face BS reply, then FU, bucko! You know it all? OK, welcome to my ignore list. But for the record, you do not know sqwat about Stihl serial numbers, bubba. Stay that way for all I care. Ignorance is bliss, so they tell me.

Oh, and now you wanna go after Mad Professor like you know it all, eh? What a turd you are. You are a smart ass, and you obviously do not know shyte from shine-o-la. Talk about a bully prick, go look in the mirror, bucko. Short timer... loser, get off this site. Loser.

windthrown, thank you for your nasty response also. Great when people show the kind of person they really are. I too have owned over 100 Stihl saws since 1972, the first 30 I purchased new. my education on serial numbers comes from this site and many bookmarks I have made over time. If you claim all are in error other than you and the other responder here, please make an effort to get the moderator to correct all erroneous information posted on arborist site rather than making your own self look like a hateful ass. I appreciate the suggestion to block people who would prefer to be bully asses than to give a helpful response which was all I expected. When home I would be glad to post the picture of the serial number but at this point there obviously is no use considering the kind of people responding. I will pursue blocking with the same gusto you respond spite. Cheers chap.

Maybe I am getting to old to understand a reply when it is combined with a bunch of snarky hate. I've re-read the comments several times and finally gleaned that the model series codes are only the first 4 digits of associated parts to a model of saw. In between the bickering, I glean it supposedly has no association with the serial number. I went out and looked at my 038, 440, 460, 660, 084, 880 and MS200 (not a t) and see the serial number on all but the 200 have no relationship to the beginning number on parts. The 200 saw starts out 1129 and then 9 more digits and the +. I also see some of the the German made saws are designated with the 'X' or a + which I take to be an x and a different angle. Of course the 4 hybrid saws ( part kit, part genuine Stihl) I just finished do not have any number nor would they have a second copy of the serial number inside the case as a genuine Stihl does. It would have been nice if it had been explained as:

The serial number has no relationship to the model designation (if that is true) and the first four digits of individual component parts are the identifer for each model class of saw.

See how easy that is? No long stories. No insults. I've messaged the moderators for help blocking the person who has repeatedly made nasty uncalled for comments on my posts. Although I appreciate the help advising to leave out a washer on an 044 I was having problems with, too many replies to too many posts have been unkind. Now I understand why Bernard asked me why I asked those people when he stopped this afternoon to discuss which parts I've found need to be Stihl on the kit hybrids.
