It was in a water well... no salt.
Drop some mystery oil on top of the piston and let it work for a day or two.

You will just need to clean things up and it will work fine. Not usually many critters or algae in well water, maybe iron bacteria but it will die once its dried out and wiped off.

I am sure I am not the only one intrigued by how a 044 ended up at the bottom of a water well.

On September 22, 2018 here in Portugal, we had a storm "Leslie" for which we were not prepared.
Some people have suffered considerable damage. One of my neighbors, 6 months later, miss hes chainsaw, and found it in addition to other things, inside a water well in the yard.
Since then it has been kept in a box waiting for someone brave to try to give it back the soul it deserves .. I will try to do my best !!

All the plastic parts are brittle, many of them have to be new.
This weekend will disassemble all parts to the crankcase.
The carb is stuck, the muffer is full of rust, chain "glued" to the all rusted blade :dumb2:
Really good challenge!!

So it was dragged to the bottom of the well by flooding. I had hoped for something funnier, perhaps involving a trained monkey.

Anyway I'll keep an eye out for a 044 spare hulk. They are not as common as 046/MS460 here but once in a while a seized one comes up for sale.

There are lots of cheap clone parts for them available. Ebay tells me one can pick up a used oem or new clone jug, crank, and poston assembly for under $50. Full plastics available new and used.

I am sure chainsawr has a bunch of parts as well.

That looks like a late 10mm mahle red lever. That is also a crazy serial # if it is a 10mm mahle. It skirts the traditional 129 cut off. But it is a euro model, so that could change things there. Mine is a 128 serial #. Some say it was the strongest 044 ever made, and I mostly agree. I have one as well - a 6 + Mahle cylinder on it. How many pluses is yours?.
The cylinder alone has good value if you can clean it up. But over all, it is worth cleaning up, splitting the case, replacing the bearings, rebuilding the carb, new hoses and intake, and getting her back together. It was free, after all.

My 10mm red lever in oak, ignition advanced, stock cylinder:
