    Toughest trees to climb

My climbing days are long past. For about 15 years back in the 80's and 90's I did a lot of cone collection contracts for the Forest Service, and BLM. I've climbed in most districts of all the national forests in Oregon. Typical day would be climbing to the top of a dozen 150' trees, some...

    Optimising an 090 for milling

I milled for years with an 090. I built a mill very similar the the one posted by lwmibc in the "best beginner sawmill for wide logs" thread. I did go through a couple top ends, I'd stick with the smaller sprockets and not push the saw to it's max. I really doubt you will see much difference in...

How do you start your wedge?

I think the OP is talking about the face cut, not the back cut. For a beginner yes, I would say doing the angle cut on the face first, wether from above, or below (humbolt), to the depth of the face cut, then intersecting that with a level cut might be easier, then come in with the back cut to...

Grinding chain loops and the difference between left and right hand cutters..

Interesting thread. I've always noticed that if my saw is cutting a curve its almost always to the right. And I've noticed filing, the right cutters "tend" to be longer on the right than the left, tho a worn bar can cause the issue as well. I've often attributed it to being right handed and...

Makita top handle saw for climbing?

I have the larger rear handle version, doing a timberframe project with it now. These saws really benefit from a conversion to a smaller bar and chain setup. Here's what you need IMO https://www.baileysonline.com/makita-1-4-sprocket-xcu-chainsaws-6-tooth-mka-1982592.html Says 6 tooth but it's...

    Building with green lumber

Yep been there. I had a lot of pine I milled on site for a project for a customer, and didnt sticker and dry it for a week or two, grew black mold. I sprayed it with bleach (using a pump sprayer), and let it sit in the sun for an hour, then washed it off with a hose, came out fine. If the mold...

Odd question... Where do loggers use the bathroom?

Most treeplanters and firefighters I know kept a bit of toilet paper tucked in their hat, otherwise it was moss for wipes. Heh, bro Bo had extra, .25 cents a sheet, do you want one or two? Hahahha.

Making gaskets - A New Punch Set

I suppose you already do, but thought I'd throw in a gasket making trick for folks who dont know. Get a variety of pistol shells, rifle ones would work too. They punch neat holes for the bolt holes, .22 is about right for 1/4" .25 for 5/16, etc. Smallest shell I can think of would be .17hmr.

What do y’all do when this happens to your bar?

I mean clamp the belt sander upside down, so the belt is facing up. I put it in a woodworking vise that opens up enough.

What do y’all do when this happens to your bar?

I dress my bars with a belt sander, clamp it upsidedown in a vise, and run the bar on it perpendicular a few times, makes quick work of the job.

    Stihl 036 wrap handle

Thanks, what I wanted to hear. More available than the 361 handles.

    Stihl 036 wrap handle

Tried a search, no clear answer. Does anyone know if a MS361 3/4 wrap handle fit a 036/ms360? if drilling a hole or 2 is all, or a little bending is needed thats fine. Or perhaps a 044 handle is a better fit? Thanks.

    Bigger bar MS261??

I'll throw in my .02. I like a 20" on my 026, for thinning saplings, and bucking firewood >12". It seems most are thinking of bar length fully in the wood. No, a 50 cc saw aint gonna pull 20-24 inches of hardwood. But having the extra length so I dont have to bend over so much is easier on my...

    Plastic crank seals?

@lone wolf- I've rebuilt my ms200t and 200 (rear handle-prolly my most used saw, love it) a few times, and thought about seals, and prefer the "plastic" OEM ones. My reasoning is that the metal ones with rubber and a small spring that holds the sealing flange is similar to oil seals in engines...

    Southern yellow pine

Yep I'd say go that 1/8 thicker to allow for shrinkage, etc. Doing construction out here in Oregon, when I got a unit of wet fir 2x4s the actual thickness tended to be 1-9/16 from the mill. Coming up a tad thick is better than not allowing for shrinkage.

Echo cs 271t carb removal help

Well, that info really helped, that carb was well stuck on the intake boot, but after prying it off I was able to clean it and finish picking out the left over bits of the plastic limiters that were keeping me from tuning it. This place rocks! EXTRA Thanks to you Ray!!!

Echo cs 271t carb removal help

Thanks, I was wondering if it had been glued onto the intake boot, feels like I'm about to tear the boot in half pulling. Might have to make something to get in there and pry it off the boot carefully.

Echo cs 271t carb removal help

Hi all, I'm not new to chainsaw repair by a ways, but this little guy sort of has me stumped. Not idleing well, tho it runs great, just wont idle, no matter how I adjust, so I'm taking the carb off for a good cleaning and check. After removing the two long screws its loose, it wiggles, cant see...

    Large mount stihl bar FS

Thought I'd post here and in the chainsaw parts, mostly milling folks use these bars. I used to mill with a 090 before I built a bs mill, and sold the 090 some years ago, but have a couple 30" bars left. One is brand new, the other is pretty used, but might be worth the shipping, I'll throw it...
