A little background, this red oak got toppled by a wind storm a couple weeks ago. Was hollow from the stump to about 4 feet up. Probly 20" dbh size...bought this 261 in January. Got about 8-10 gallons through it. Brad modded the muffler and advance the timing. Real fun to run in the smaller...

No offense sunfish, but did you read the original post? The OP wants to try anything other than a Stihl or husky. Granted your suggestions are good ones, but he aint looking for a husky or stihl. To the OP, IMO muffler mod and retune that 250 and keep it, but I understand wanting to try...

Brad, why does a 261 need as radical modifications in your opinion? Emissions, ease of manufacture, reliability ...or??

IMO for 50cc=stihl ms 261, 60cc=husky 562xp. I don't know but you read a lot of great reviews of the 562xp on Husky's website, conversely the 550xp not so much. Good luck with your decision.:msp_biggrin:

I took a pile of cedar trees down at a golf course I worked at years ago in TN, with an 026... didn't make much, but man was that fun loading up the tractor with that sweet smelling cedar. IMO the 026 is a classic.

BTW the tags are always msrp.

Dealer I go thru always comes down on the sticker price. Says on that saw, then checks his paperwork, I can do this...x amount. Always lower than what the tag says.

After further review I think that new used 261 would be hard to beat. 044 prolly too much saw..
