    BC Faller Certification

Dead-On! Is the 900 challenge still available, I heard they were going to be closing that.

    BC Faller Certification

I tried arguing this on the phone with an officer once. Even though we fall under (tree services - other than forestry operations), we are subject to many of the same restrictions. For example, you must have a second set of (duplicate) climbing gear on-site for residential tree work. If there...

    BC Faller Certification

That's what I thought too, but a friend of mine who's one of the trainers pointed this out: BC Forest Safety It may have come off as a joke, but the belt and spurs thing, I'm serious. I talked to a number of officers at WorkSafeBC before I did this, they laughed, passed me around, and in the...

too many toys not enough money

That's what a line of credit is for. :D I always think of it this way, the government is paying for much of my gear, eventually, in tax saving because it's another write-off. At least that's how I justify it to myself, the wife isn't always convinced.

Throw your belt and spurs on, go up 2' - now you're topping.

    One Handed Saw Operation

I see people here are from all over, I think the techniques one uses has a lot to do with the type of trees one is cutting and the situations one is cutting under. On average I cut 600-1000+ branches a day (for real - hemlock, cedar, fir) what am I going to do - get into what position? Please...

    One Handed Saw Operation

That says it all, as far as I'm concerned. I've got pics of the guys who teach this for a well known organization doing exactly the opposite while on the job. These guys are going to be doing a few trees near where I live - I'll get some pics. This may be Davey's official position, but if they...

    One Handed Saw Operation

One handed sawing... you can't do that! It's like, like, so unsafe! Doesn't matter that you have 200 branches on a tree and you have to hold on to every one - tie on a rope, cut with two hands and lower each branch. The only time I one hand a saw while removing branches is about 90% of the time...

Douglas-fir properties (via varieties) can vary from area to area. Here on the coast the large branches will often "pop" off as soon as you touch the top of the branch with your saw or put much weight on them. So if you're thinning you have to take care that one branch doesn't land on the one...

Logging big bottomland hardwood timber South Louisiana

Good job. Nice gig. Eric, here they cut flares, etc. off them before loading them on the trucks, loads nicer (more room) and the butt is often crap for milling. <edit>I don't know how they grade there, but often they'll grade a stick based on the lowest common denominator. Therefore, sometimes...

Thanks Ray, it's funny how after so many years, all you have to do is see a snag and you know who cut the tree down; everyone has their own unique way of doing them.

HAHA, tell me about it, I've been threatened with pelet guns, people laying under the tree, etc. One lady lay under her landlords piece of crap mistletoe infested hemlock and my partner landed a 20' long 4" diameter branch about three feet from her head - she moved. Thanks:blush:

We do this on the taller ones. Apparently here the bats won't use anything under 30'. Don't know if it's true, but that's what we've been told. Usually do the bird thing on those in the green-belts. Got any pics?

Snags are left all the time here on municipal land. Left to decay and for the birds to hammer at, usually at heights of 15' - 25' depending on targets. Reduces the amount of wood you have to deal with in tight locations and saves the municipalities a bit of money. Been leaving snags for over 16...

Ya, what Sawinredneck said. I though you were one of the guys messing around or a troll. Be safe.

    Newbie to spur climbing

LOL, good one! I wouldn't open with that one though, try building the rest of your comedy routine first. If I am wrong, I profusly appologize. I'm trying for my class A welding ticket tomorrow even though I've never welded before, next week I should be doing high-rise structures or maybe...

    Spur pad recommendation

Never noticed that, hmm. I'm sure mine are regular; I always wear bucking pants when working and have never had a problem. Narrow might be good if you're climbing in regular pants - don't know though.
