    Stihl 500i long term storage

A lot of times my saws will sit during the hottest 3 to 4 months of the summer, and often during duck and deer season, but occasionally one of my saws will sit for about a year. I don’t drain fuel or run them empty. I just keep e-free fuel in them and keep them in my air conditioned gear closet...

I agree, I think the stabilizers in a lot of oils do a great deal to help.

Who makes the best Lineman pliers and Diagonal cutters?

I liked the old maroon handled ones. Talk about a fluke, and how a good quality company can have the occasional banana… I broke the handle clean off a pair once. It was weird. I had cut with them so much that the inside “fish tape pulling area” was starting to touch, so when I tried to bend them...

    Stihl 500i long term storage

Purge it with canned E-free fuel, run it dry, or not… and store it INDOORS. That’ll be the magic bullet. In a year’s time the fuel might not spark, but it won’t damage anything. Pour it out start over. Storing a saw in a barn with big temp and humidity swings wears a saw out faster than a dull...

Who makes the best Lineman pliers and Diagonal cutters?

I never had a pair last me more than a few years. Always ended up cutting into something hot and ended up beading them up. That was just from carelessness though but being an electrician in the 80’s was a lot different. Lol

Who makes the best Lineman pliers and Diagonal cutters?

30 years ago no one competed with Klein for lineman’s, but these days there are some good options. The Klein are still good but I like knipex for most of their cutting tools. Knipex are harder and will chip if you do too much horsing around on them or twisting. Klein are pretty tough but softer...

    Semi-chisel vs full chisel

That’s for sure. Sometimes if you hit a nail or whatever, it’s hardly worth it.

    Semi-chisel vs full chisel

I just cut the skirt off of a really dirty root bulb with one of my chisel chains, and I feel like it was plenty durable. Hard for me to tell the difference in durability. But I definitely like the way they cut.

    395xp lackluster

In clearing jobs like the one I’m on, I’ll use the 395 for just about any stump that is more than 20 inches or so. Yesterday I flush cut 8 stumps that were about 3 foot and that is where that saw is much needed. Like you, I also noodle big rounds if there’s no grapple. It’s an ugly saw for ugly...

    395xp lackluster

While this thread is fresh, I had to run my 395 all day yesterday. I’ll be on it again all day today. It doesn’t normally get ran a ton. It was getting heavy by the end of the day yesterday.

I’ve considered it many times. Honestly I’d be more interested in tracking down an Echo 1201. I am pretty happy with the 395 though. Most times, it’s plenty of saw. For me it has become kind of the versatile saw for big stuff while still being great for running a 32. I still keep a 70ish cc...

Can’t even count the times I wish I had more than the 42. It’s not always feasible to cut from both sides and we get into some big trees.

Echo cs680 vs echo cs620 vs stihl ms362

    I thought this looked familiar.

It would, but I would like to have 461 to compliment mine. They were fine saws. Last one I saw was in 2020 sitting on the shelf. Wish I would have bought it.

It will. I run a 42 all the time, but I run skip. It would pull any chain though.

Even new, the 395 should be impressive. One of my favorite saws. I’ll be sorry to see it go.

I cut up a Cottonwood yesterday over 4 foot in diameter with my 395. It made quick work of it and I can’t imagine a better saw for a job like that. I’m always happy with its power, and when I have to do rip cutting or noodling, I feel like the saw was made for it. I’d check the tuning and chain.

    The Echo rattle

My 680 has always had a rattle when idling. I’ve checked everything. It’s been 7 years and it gets run often, and is my most trouble free saw, so I’ve quit caring.

    The Echo rattle

I’ve noticed a slight rattle on my 680 since I bought it. After 7 years I’ve forgotten about it.

    395xp for kawasaki

Good ole’ Kumatsu 543! Those were Zenoah/Redmax saws. Just recently discontinued, I believe.
