    Purchased a new 562XP yesterday

The 562s are dynamite in my book. I own a tree company and they've been our main ground saws for many years. We settled on 20" bars as a good all around length.

    60cc chainsaw choice

You'd be hard pressed in my opinion to beat the 562s. We've been running them as our main ground saws for years with no major issues whatsoever. I can't imagine the hours we have on them and you can't kill em. They will still cut with any stock 60cc saw out there. I'm pondering on purchasing a...

What's the current favorite lightweight bar?

Yeah, never jumped on that bandwagon. Show me an advantage that "outweighs" the price, like lasting twice as long, and I might bite. A few more or less ounces on a 395 means squat and what are going to gain on a climbing saw? Take a biner off your saddle and you just made up the difference.

    New thread

Our wild grape vines have a SWL of 10,000 pounds.

    New thread

Looks like quite a job. You got that right about the vines. They are the enemy of every climber and will work you into the ground. I'm looking at and feeling the result of sawing through a mass of poison ivy vines even now.

Suggestions on first equipment to buy?

It all depends on location, dump sites, number of employees you're working, etc. If you've got a place to dump debris for free or cheap close to your work area, you can start out with a dump trailer and the machine you decide on, whether skid steer, tractor w/grapple or whatever. I can't imagine...

    Need some wedge wisdom

Not sure why you say that Ted. Limb wood is nearly always softer and weaker than heart wood. I never make them out of limbs.

    Need some wedge wisdom

Any hard wood will work but straight grained woods will split and break a lot faster than live oak which is gnarly, twisted and hard.

    Need some wedge wisdom

Read a little closer, we're talking about the life of a wedge. Send a few blocks of bristlecone to NW Florida and I'll whittle some wedges out of it see how it holds up.

    Need some wedge wisdom

Live oak will outlive pine ten to one. Heart wood is hard, limb wood not so much. Dry is harder and drives better.

if you could only have one saw

Yeah, it better be good to outdo the 562. Mine have definitely stood the test of time.

    Bow bar needed

I haven't seen one in use in many years. Pulp wooders and loggers here used them on every brand of saw for bucking.

    Need some wedge wisdom

I used to make them out of live oak which is about the toughest and hardest wood we have here. The easiest way to do it is to leave a high stump, make two angled cuts down into the stump that meet at the length that you need. Pop out your super wide wedge and cut the desired widths out with a...

    Soft shackles

Didn't say anything about simplicity, I said you better be thinking if you are going to have a lengthy career in any dangerous business.

    Soft shackles

I've got to disagree with that first statement. You can NEVER think too much when working in or on a tree. Your brain is what will keep you alive and well if you use it. If you think it out, you can avoid all but the freakiest things. The sudden and violent part is true indeed. There would be a...

Any 250lb plus climbers out there? if so what gear do you use?

The folks at TreeStuff are awesome! Great stuff, great prices, free shipping, great advice. Go for it Nate, climbing is not just for small guys. I've known some big guys that were great on their spikes. Rope work is definitely harder for heavy weights and older guys like me but we can still get...

    Is this normal oak behavior

Hey Husk, I don't think you're a tree idiot, the mature leaves are definitely water oak and tree smith is right, some juvenile leaves are different. I would wager that those leaves in the first pic receive very little direct sunlight. They do look a lot like red oak or black oak. The bark is...

    Sappy Hitch Cord

I cut a lot of pines and have problems with sap getting on my climbing line and hitch cord and making it hard to tend slack as the sticky hitch wants to grab and not release. Anybody got any simple solutions besides changing an expensive piece of cord?

    Friction knot for 3/8" rope

Hey JWP, I haven't looked back at this thread for a while, you may have the problem solved. The 6mm vectran is pretty small and may bite too tightly to loosen easily after loading. The 8mm cord will work well. You may try the Distel if the swabisch is binding. Two fingers on top and a nice...

    Friction knot for 3/8" rope

A better choice would be a hitch cord like Samson's Ice Tail cord or Yale's Beeline. These 8mm cords (5/16) have an abs of over 8,000 lbs. I use the Ice Tail for hitches on my climbing line. It is limp as a dishrag and works great. Learn to tie a climbing hitch like the Distel, it will work...
