Clutch-side crankshaft bearing not turning (MS361)

I finally was able to check, and the inner bearing race isn't turning. I also checked to see if the rollers will move if prodded (via the ring which encases them), and they do. Mind you, not super easily, but that could be because I'm introducing an action that normally doesn't move them (and...

Clutch-side crankshaft bearing not turning (MS361)

I've got the crankcase taped shut with a second coat of paint that has another 12 hours of drying, but as soon as I can handle it without putting my fingerprints it it, I'm going to remove the tape to see if the inner race is moving. One thing I did notice I didn't expect was that I could see...

Clutch-side crankshaft bearing not turning (MS361)

I have the saw apart (i.e. cylinder removed), so I can see them pretty clearly when the counter weights aren't in the way. Enough to see that the flywheel side rollers are moving, and the clutch side rollers are not.

Clutch-side crankshaft bearing not turning (MS361)

I've rotated the shaft back and forth plenty hoping the bearing would start to turn, but it hasn't. I also soaked it in WD40 for most of a day, but that had no effect. I thought about taking a small screwdriver or something else I could use to push the rollers, but I thought better of that...

Clutch-side crankshaft bearing not turning (MS361)

And I was hoping somebody would respond that the rollers were stuck somehow, and suggest ways to dislodge them. Well, if your assessment is true, my rebuild is done until next year as my budget must now focus on Christmas. I should probably remove my painting tape so I can see if the inner...

Clutch-side crankshaft bearing not turning (MS361)

Hi all, I'm doing an MS361 rebuild due to a couple of air leaks. One was in the cylinder base gasket, the other was on the clutch-side oil seal. I replaced the oil seals, and I matched the depth of the original seals; however, I noticed after the fact that the clutch side crankshaft bearing...

    Stihl gray spray paint

Several members through the years have said that TSC Ford Light Gray is about as close a match as one can get. I purchased a spray can of the Ford Light Gray Tractor and Implement paint yesterday, and if the can's lid is accurate, it's a nearly perfect match to the unfaded color I exposed...

Dishwasher vs. Oil Seals & Cylinder

The crankcase came out water-free inside, even after running it through 3 long, detergent-rich wash cycles, and a couple of extra rinse cycles (but no dry cycles). I sealed off the crankcase by reattaching the cylinder using my old gasket (which is being replaced), and I prepared the crankcase...

Dishwasher vs. Oil Seals & Cylinder

Thanks guys. As a precaution, I'm going to set my timer for 5 minute intervals so I can check to make sure the crankcase isn't being breached. I'd fogotten isopropyl alcohol's ability to attract water, but that would be the route to take. I instead was going to use WD40, then follow up by...

Dishwasher vs. Oil Seals & Cylinder

Hi all, I debated if I should bump one of the 2+ year old dishwasher threads, but decided to start new as my question is pretty specific, and it isn't answered in the aforementioned threads. I'm rebuilding the top end of a 361, and this and that eventually led to me deciding to use the...

    Stihl cylinder identification (1135)

Hi all, I'm picking up some parts for a backup MS361, and I have a chance to pick up what I believe is an appropriate cylinder; however, I'd like to confirm prior to finalizing the deal. Here are the markings on the cylinder base: Clutch side: Stihl with 112 a little higher Flywheel side...

    Quick impulse line question

Thanks everybody. I picked up some Permatex along with a compression gauge and vac hand pump. I can always use the epoxy I have on hand if the Permatex fails at some point.

    Quick impulse line question

Thanks. Any suggestions what I can use to seal it that will endure all the vibration? I would think some epoxy might do it, but that would also make the nipple a permanent fixture of the crankcase (not that I can think of a reason off the top of my head why that would be a problem). Also...

    Quick impulse line question

Hi all, I'm chasing what I'm sure is an air leak somewhere in my MS361 (erratic behavior I cannot eliminate via carb adjustments), and I don't have easy access to a compression and/or vac tester, so before I retrieve said tools and tear it down to check the oil seals, piston, rings, etc., I was...

    Stihl MS361 Sprocket issue

If everything I've read about the 361 is true, I have no doubt it will serve me well for its intended purposes. I'll soon find out. I still wish a friend of mine who "borrowed" my old Pro Mac and then moved away with it would have been a bit smarter though. As it was, my friend says it got to...

    Stihl MS361 Sprocket issue

Yes, it's there. I checked with the service manual prior to posting, but it didn't disclose if there was supposed to be any play.

    Stihl MS361 Sprocket issue

Hi all...I'm not a forum newbie, but this is my first post on this forum. I've been lurking here for awhile learning what's new with chainsaws since the days when I used one regularly (Pro Mac 850) so I could make an informed choice in the used market. I'm already grateful to those who have...
