SUCCESS!!! Just repaired Stihl 045/056 Bosch electronic ignition!!!!!

It should be a direct fit. If you install it at one extreme or the other then it should still work. If you install it all the way clockwise then it will be advanced as much as possible. You will know if it is advanced too much if the recoil starter snaps back when you pull it, it should be fine...

Help with edging setup - Chain/Bar questions Makita 6421

I remember back when I was first interested in chainsaw milling I thought about using smaller chain. I didn't know anything about low pro chains, I thought about using .325 pitch. It never happened though, I just use regular 3/8. Another thing you can try is a skip chain if you find you are...

Granberg milling with an old 041AV

On each end you hammer two notched nails in and level them. Make them about the same width apart. You can notch the nails with a chainsaw file and face the notches toward the end of the log. I like to measure from the pith to the top of the nails so both ends are the same distance from the pith...

Granberg milling with an old 041AV

I also mill with an 045 super. I actually have several 045/056 and mostly use an 056 super right now. I've never used a ladder before to make the first cut. I've always used nails and lay a board on top like in the picture. It works really well.

SUCCESS!!! Just repaired Stihl 045/056 Bosch electronic ignition!!!!!

I've actually recently had 4 fails in a row which has taken my 100% success rate for the fixes to around 50%. I always try the Foggysail fix first and if that doesn't work then I use a Nova module. At first I had two successes with the Nova modules and thought that the coil parts rarely...

SUCCESS!!! Just repaired Stihl 045/056 Bosch electronic ignition!!!!!

I've tried five or six fixes since discovering this thread and about half took the fix. For the ones that did not work I used a Nova II module or similar and advanced the flywheel and now have a 100% success for fixing them one way or another. It took a bit of tinkering to get the Nova fix...

SUCCESS!!! Just repaired Stihl 045/056 Bosch electronic ignition!!!!!

I think that is what the repair is. Breaking the circuit to the old built in capacitor and making a new circuit with a new capacitor in it. I don't know what the PCB is, I just do it the way that is instructed and it has worked for me. Do you mean just cut that wire and run a circuit with a...

Anyone ever milled lap siding at home?

I'm a bit late to this thread but I have found that milling tapered siding is very easy when using a chainsaw mill. I did some 7" wide tapered from about 11/16" to 5/16". Just square the log to put an edge on it, cut beams the thickness depending on what you want the width of siding to be. Put...

SUCCESS!!! Just repaired Stihl 045/056 Bosch electronic ignition!!!!!

Your suspicions were right all along. Glad you got it going. I got my second Nova II/Bosch ignition going and it runs good. I think I had so much trouble the first time around because the carburetors are a bit old and they would do okay with the idle at 2,500 but not so good with the Nova fix...

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

I had tons of trouble with my Nova II fix the first attempt with two different chips. Then I gave up for a long time. I then decided to build another saw and didn't want to buy another ignition so I gave it yet another try. It started and ran good so I milled a log and it ran great with no...

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

I have mine advanced a half key width. Anything less and it won't start well. It starts and runs at one key width but the chain advance problem seems to be worse and there is a little snap back on the pull cord if not pulled fast enough.

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

I cut a piece of rubber and punch holes to fit the carburetor mount bolts and slide it on and attach the carburetor over it. Same thing with muffler. Also unscrew the throttle adjust screw so it doesn't get caught on the throttle lever or remember to flip the throttle lever up onto it. I broke a...

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

That's interesting, I thought the points ignitions would have better results than the electronic. I finally got mine to work nicely with the Bosch electronic coil but it has to be tuned between 1,800 to 2,000 rpm or the chain will spin at idle. It has four metal plates about evenly spaced on the...

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

I have found that with an air leak they can still start but depending on how bad it is you may need to adjust the carburetor to an extreme to get it to start. For an air leak you would have to open the screws, for a high metering lever or plugged air flow you would have to close them. It's best...

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

Have you checked the metering lever and cleaned the carburetor? I take a razor from a utility knife and use the side edge as a straight edge to slide across the surface above the metering lever and if it catches then lower it. I like to get it even or a hair lower so the razor doesn't catch. It...

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

The spark looks very strong. Your plug gap looks wide. Maybe set it to .020". Have you checked the choke lever to rule out that?

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

If the metering lever is too high then that can throw off the carb settings and also cause gas to spit out the carb. If that were the problem then an alternative to fixing it properly would be to turn the L screw in to about a half turn out and try to start it and then try 5/8, then try 3/4 turn...

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

With the foggysail fix I'd keep the flywheel key in. I can think of a some things to try if you haven't yet. Check that the choke lever is closing all the way by turning it at the carburetor with your fingers. I had trouble starting one once because the choke was not completely closing. I...

Need help with Stihl 056 ignition fix using Nova II module

My first chainsaw was Husqvarna 55 rancher. I loved that saw but got rid of it when someone asked if I'd trade it for a Stihl 044. I have managed to find a new old stock Stihl 045 super piston and cylinder assembly and also new bearings on both sides. I already had a new crankshaft. Should have...
