I wonder if it will cut through a crotch.

Son of a bee! New chain time

No offense taken. You're absolutely right. I do plan to learn from my mistake here. I just didn't realize at the time what was happening, because this is the first time I've hit metal with the saw.

Son of a bee! New chain time

Here are the results of that for the piece on the right in the original pic: Judging from how some of those nails were bent while being driven in, I'd say the "kids' treehouse" theory is probably right. The other piece went in the fire tonight, but I can't dig through the ashes until tomorrow.

Yeah, live and learn, I guess.

Son of a bee! New chain time

I didn't count. More than just those two, though. That was just a representative sampling. And some of the ones that weren't broken off looked worse than the ones in those pics.

Son of a bee! New chain time

I have some better pictures now that the piece is split down. Here's another shot of the bigger nails, with a #2 Phllips screwdriver for scale: And a measurement: Here are the points of the smaller nails coming out of the other side of a split piece: And there was another surprise...

Thanks, but that bark's from a different log.

Son of a bee! New chain time

Not all that little, really. I know the photo lacks a size reference, but I'd guess they're 16d to 20d nails. I'm going to try to keep track of the naily pieces after I split them, and watch the ashes for nail fragments to try to get an idea of the size. Well, if I can remember it that...

Son of a bee! New chain time

I picked up a CL scrounge load today, mostly some sort of fruitwood but also a chunk of black walnut and a section of something big and unidentified that someone had already noodled into quarters. I'd have taken more of it because it looked good, and there was a lot of it lying around the site...

    Wood ID?

Well, the Wikipedia article says the Osage orange is a member of the mulberry family. Apparently the wood is exceptionally tough and durable when seasoned. So maybe I'll rescue these pieces from the fire next year, and make tool handles from them instead.

    Wood ID?

Aha! Quite possible. Those trees are all over the place around here, dropping their big wrinkly green softballs. I've never seen one cut down before, though, as it happens.

    Wood ID?

Well, if you want to drive across the state and unstack a face cord of ash to get at the six pieces of mulberry at the bottom, come on up. :D

    Wood ID?

Picked up one branch of this mystery wood with a scrounged load. It's bright yellow and splits easily. Never seen anything like it. Anyone? I suppose I should mention it was in southern Wisconsin.
