The Farm Tractor in the Woodlot

My Kubota Subcompact BX2200 moves some pretty big logs. I don't do much so it suffices for now. I should have a larger tractor. I need the loader on and full of ballast or it will do a wheelie on slopes.

Recommended Bar Size for Husky 372XP (non XTorq)

Get a 36" mill for when you get a larger saw. You won't have much luck over 28" bar in that saw and it will be hard on it. After trying it out with the 372 you will be looking for a 90cc saw.

Black walnut mantel beam over the weekend

Looks like fun! Unfortunately the crack will likely get bigger but that just adds character. Get it stickered up with weight or straps to hold it straight during drying or it will likely curl a lot.

What size bar for an 036 Pro is best

Depends what you are using it for. 20" is ideal for me with a 60cc saw.

    Well it happened

Your lucky. I still don't understand how it happened - I mainly would like to know so I can be careful of it. Were you cutting with the rounds in the same location of the pictures or were they moved? Did the round roll back some and catch the saw pulling it out of your hand? I had a 6" tree...

    OWB Questions

I don't remember exactly what is normal, but 7-10 degrees sounds good. I think mine looses about 5 but my pipes are run together in insulated pvc and mingle temp on the way. Many variables but generally it is better to have more water moving to keep the boiler from having hot spots...

Moisture meters, what are u using?

I have a General from Lowes with (I think) a 9 volt battery that lasts a long time. I also have one from Harbor freight with the button batteries and it eats batteries like crazy so I might as well toss it. Both work good.

    Stihl 026 bar size

I ran an 18” .325 on my 260 for years and it was great when it was my only saw. I put a 16” on last year and love it for my smaller stuff. 20” might be more than it would like.

Treated buckthorn stumps with Tordon now nearby hackberries dying

I'll be honest I wasn't very careful about dribbling too much here and there as I have used Tordon the same for years and never had a problem around other tree types. I will be using glyphosphate to treat stumps next time I am near hackberry. Could be worse. I am really glad I did not use...

Treated buckthorn stumps with Tordon now nearby hackberries dying

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely wait it out. I don’t usually cut trees in distress until they are all dead. We have 60 acres of woods. The elms grow and die and we have some bur oak blight that isn’t always fatal until it is. I think I have some oak wilt starting on pin oaks in the...

Treated buckthorn stumps with Tordon now nearby hackberries dying

Yes. Random wherever the buckthorn was but generally the more stumps around them the worse they are.

Treated buckthorn stumps with Tordon now nearby hackberries dying

Yes the understory is opened up significantly without all the buckthorn.

Treated buckthorn stumps with Tordon now nearby hackberries dying

Last December I cleared a bunch of buckthorn and treated the stumps with Tordon. I have 2 areas where there are hackberry trees that are thin or nearly dead. Some of these are 30" diameter and 80 ft tall mature trees. No other type of tree is showing any new distress where I treated (except...

    Pin oak down

Some nice wood there. Looks like a fun one to cut up without pinching the saw.

Advice: what chainsaw is (really) dependable?

I think any of the big brands are reliable (Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo). Fuel quality and time sitting with old fuel ruins any saws reliability. I like Stihl, so a ms362 would be my recommendation. Use non ethanol fuel and drain/run out the tank if not using for more than a couple months will...

    Heatmor Help

Do you have any water to water heat exchangers? Could be leaking water into the Heatmor loop.

    Big American Elm

Burn good = Yes! Smell good - no. I usually wait until the bark falls off before cutting then they are clean and nearly dry.

    Big American Elm

Not many big elms left in my area. I had a deadfall that broke the top off a couple years ago in a widow maker that just fell recently. I took some pictures. Cut most for firewood and kept a nice 8 ft log for slabbing. The last elm I slabbed warped terribly, but got some nice wood out of it...

    My Biggest Tree

Fun times for the kid. In SE MN we don't have that big of trees either, but I know of a record bur oak nearby that is 450 inches around! Any day in the woods is a good day.
