    880 threw a chain now it's throwing a fit.....advice please

Hey guys. I appreciate all of the comments. I'm sorry I haven't been on since my last post. I run all of my saws at 40:1. I've thought about giving them even more oil in the mix, but I see a lot of mixed reviews on that. I trust many of yall on here, and many of yall know much much much more...

    880 threw a chain now it's throwing a fit.....advice please

I want to start by saying that I meticulously maintain all of my saws. I was milling a 54" red maple a few days ago, and I threw the chain off the 60" bar. This has happened twice. I had the chain tightened as far as I dare tighten it. I worry about screwing that clutch side crank bearing up. I...

Where to sell slabs and how to determine value

Scott that is about what I was expecting honestly. A lot of lowballers! They'll want it for next to nothing. I for sure won't be a hoarder. I do have intentions of keeping the few pieces I need for the projects I want to do, but that is about it.

Milled Some more of the big white oak today

Firstly, BobL, I would like to say thank you for being such an asset to this site and especially with CSM. I hope to be as adept with my rig(s) one day as you are. I thought milling would be a piece of cake at first, but I quickly learned that there were many many little details I had to learn...

Where to sell slabs and how to determine value

Well, look at the price for this one slab of maple at the bottom left hand corner of the pic. I don't know if the guy lied, but he said he had five prime maple slabs that were used for a table like the one in the pic. He had the five tables up until a few months ago and has sold all but one...

Where to sell slabs and how to determine value

Everything I have at the moment is 9' in length. The cherry is 8/4 and is 15-20" in width. The maple is 11/4 and the large stuff is 30"+ to 27" in width. I'm really just wanting to establish of this is worth doing outside of what I need for my own projects, or I am just enameled with it and...

    Saw Recomendation

I don't know....it might scar you for life looking like that. Are you sure you want to take that risk? I can't imagine what that Mac is like. I posted the other day about an issue I had with the 880 where the decomp would disengage halfway through a pull stroke to start it. I've seen it...

    Saw Recomendation

Boon we are definitely on the same page. Here is a pic of one of the" ugly " maple slabs I've been getting into lately. I promise this slab compared to the others is just ok, but it is still gorgeous to me. I got my 880 just for this tree. Now this slab in the pic is only about 34-37" at its...

Where to sell slabs and how to determine value

I was curious if anyone knew of an outlet in which to sell some nice slabs, mostly spalted figured maple and figured cherry? Anyone know roughly what price per board foot the stuff in my pics should bring? Thanks in advance.

homemade rail set up help questions

Nice looking wood man! How'd those rails work out? Was your chain new and get that loose after the cut? Either way....looking great!

    Saw Recomendation

I don't know if you decided which saw to go with yet, but I have been using a Stihl ms660 with a 36" Granberg and 36" bar. I came into a 50+" maple to mill that had burl, spalting, and was just going to be an amazing tree to mill, and I had to upgrade. You probably could get a 660 or a 395 to...

    Stihl MS880 Decomp issue

Today while milling a large maple with a 60" bar and mill on my newer 880, I had something crazy happen. I went to restart the saw for the second cut, and I followed the same procedure of pulling the throttle, putting it in the position right above full choke, made sure the brake was on, hit the...

    Most efficient size Granberg Mill?

I don't know how much knowledge you have on CSM's, but if you're milling say 20" logs max with a Granberg, then be sure to get a bar that is around 4-6" longer than the width of the mill so you can max out the length on the CSM as you lose a few inches due to the design of the mill. I just went...

New MS880 milling for the first time..

Which muffler do you have on your 880? Stainless or aluminum? I would hope that the 880 would respond like the 660 does with a muff mod. There is a clear cut difference in my 660 since I put a dual port on her. I honestly thought about just putting another hole on the side of the 880 muffler...

New MS880 milling for the first time..

I hope to one day mill those legendary hardwoods found in Australia. Our hardwoods are soft compared to what y'all deal with. I agree though. In hardwood like that, you need all the oil you can get on that chain. Are there any tricks y'all use to mill that stuff? Does it cause excessive...

    66" bar + MS880 = Saw Dust and Slow Cutting. What's wrong?

rip chain works a bit different from normal crosscut chain. You've got clearing cutter teeth and scratcher teeth. The scratcher teeth cut a groove down each side of the cut and the clearing cutters cut the groove of wood left in the middle. The 10 degree angle removes smaller amounts of wood at...

New MS880 milling for the first time..

That 880 throws out oil in amounts that are excessively sufficient to lube a 36" bar while milling. I am only saying that because mine will have oil running down the sides of the bar when crosscutting with a 36" bar. I changed my 660 oil pump to the Aussie/high flow version, many it will dang...

    Killed the MS880 while milling

Those are the exact same series of questions that I asked. I want to know how the bar got stuck milling. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but I have never done it unless the wedges slip out and I go to remove the saw from between the slab and cant.
