    My oiler

Thanks for all this effort Bob. Great experiment! It turned out very close to what I was saying and expecting earlier. The tackifyer/additives has a very very small effect related to pressure or head. - Paul

    My oiler

Most of the additives to oils are a black box, different and secret by each oil manufacturer. The temp/viscosity effects are well known and understood as they meet a given rating. Let's see the test results. I'll be pretty surprised if the additives have much of an effect on the test results...

Sure but straight SAE 30 will not flow well below freezing so not for cars. OK for lawn equipment and small engines as they don't operate there. All these details can just be googled. Point is pressure or head applies to all of them, which is the major input into the flow rate, where...

    My oiler

Bob, yes, but I'm saying the viscosity effect from the oil additives is not that great and can't come close to overpowering the pressure effect. The key thing with the oil additives is to try to maintain a reasonable viscosity with different TEMPERATURES, not pressures, so your car oil will...

Bob, there will be some effect from the pressure for sure as the height changes - your original thought. So there might be some benefit from a stubby reservoir over a tall small diameter one. Kjudd's time measurement idea is a good one. I would only add one more run at 1/4 full to compare to...

Pointers on how to start milling own wood?..im green as the wood itself

I see the 290 as a 56cc saw. I run a 28" bar for milling on my Echo cs-590 at 60cc, but use only full skip and milling chain teeth for that. 30 inch bar would certainly be pushing it for the 290. I think you could, but you wouldn't want to do it very long that way. It would just be slow to...

Pointers on how to start milling own wood?..im green as the wood itself

Hi Koolken and welcome here. I'm fairly newer to milling myself, but am on year 3 of it and have learned a ton the first few years. I recommend you read the "smallest cc saws used for milling thread". I would not buy a big expensive saw or setup to start with. You can mill with something...

Wanted to share my cheap-o solar kiln designdesign

Hi, um, I had multiple classes in heat transfer back in college for mechanical engineering and actually calculated solar radiation equations and such. Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer are fields of mechanical engineering. Black body radiation is always the greatest possible heat absorption...

Beautiful Kjudd, I've been thinking about making one for some time but didn't get around to it yet, and thinking about how to control the flow, etc. I have a Tractor Supply local so will start there. Super! - Paul

I need to make one just like this. Can I ask what are the fittings sizes and the tubing size? And the control flow valve? Where could I buy these? thx- Paul

    Milling Branches

And if you or anyone tries this sort of thing, please post back for the forum the results after dried/final cut. No guarantees here. I'm drying my own now but not there yet. But I'm experimenting with better end checking treatments too at the same time, so there will be "confounding" factors...

Smallest cc saws anyone has used for milling

That's awesome! Thanks for the info and the nice photos too! I have not heard BlueMax mentioned on AS yet for anything! Great to know it will mill! If you haven't yet, try BobL's progressive raker method and report back on the difference for you! - Paul

    Sealing endgrain

There MUST be something to this water immersion then. It must be beneficial. Who else has done this! Surely some on the forum have! - Paul

Smallest cc saws anyone has used for milling

That's interesting Bob. I've never run into that but I'm sure it could happen. At that point, I would probably restrict the intake as needed to rebalance the fuel/air ratio and just cover up part of the filter area. I'm finding the modern saws seem to be pretty muffler restricted for...

    Milling Branches

Hi, I would mill them for sure. But when milling a branch, I would always cut it vertically as it was on the tree vertically. Meaning, don't cut the branch horizontally or 90 degrees from where it was vertical when on the tree. If you do, the stresses will make it bow/warp alot when it is...

Smallest cc saws anyone has used for milling

Oh yes, any muffler mod needs a retune for sure. Didn't say that but that was implied. Yes, will lean out the saw without a retune richer afterwards. - Paul

Now that is just clever Joe, using the lag bolt heads to lock in the plane. I will remember this one if I ever have to do something similar! - Paul

Smallest cc saws anyone has used for milling

YES, my first try with the progressive raker angles is the little cs-310. It really helped to make that milling capable, and I was pretty amazed how well it worked once I did that to the rakers. It will bog down in the cut if pushed into it too much (whereas my 60 or 80 cc saws don't really...
